I have added a reference to the Jeffrey John affair. Because of the lack of other text here, it currently appears as if a defining feature of Richard Harries. But it is not meant to be. Article name[edit]

Renaming this article to "Richard Harries, Baron Harries of Pentregarth" may, for all I know, be entirely in keeping with Wikipedia policy, but it is none the less silly for all that.—Laurence Boyce 09:52, 10 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The policy is to include the peerage title unless the person is known "exclusively" by his or her personal name. Lord Harries of Pentregarth's title has only just been gazetted, so who knows whether he'll become better known as that. See Wikipedia:Naming conventions (names and titles).

EXCEPTIONS: When individuals received... peerages after retiring from the post of Prime Minister (unless they are better known for their later career under an additional/alternative title), or for any other reason are known exclusively by their personal names, do not include the peerage dignity. Title: in case of confusion[edit]

The Times (8 July 2006) reported:

The life barony conferred upon the Right Rev Richard Douglas Harries, lately Bishop of Oxford, has been gazetted by the name, style and title of Baron Pentregarth, of Ceinewydd in the County of Dyfed.

However, this would appear to be a mistake. The London Gazette (6 July 2006) reported:

The QUEEN HAS BEEN PLEASED BY LETTERS PATENT UNDER THE GREAT SEAL OF THE REALM DATED 30 JUNE 2006 TO CONFER THE DIGNITY OF A BARONY OF THE UNITED KINGDOM FOR LIFE UPON THE RIGHT REVEREND RICHARD DOUGLAS HARRIES, LATELY BISHOP OF OXFORD, BY THE NAME, STYLE AND TITLE OF BARON HARRIES OF PENTREGARTH, of Ceinewydd in the County of Dyfed.

I saw the Times version before I saw the Gazette version and I was tempted to "correct" his title here, so I am posting this just in case anybody else has been misled by the incorrect title that appeared in The Times, which has a much wider readership than The London Gazette. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Oxonian2006 (talk • contribs) 12:26, 15 July 2006 (UTC)

Another user originally moved this page to Baron Pentregarth. It was also reported as such in the Telegraph, and on the Dodonline political biography site used by the House of Lords. However, the House of Lords itself always refered to "Harries of Pentregarth". The Telegraph printed a correction the following day, but made another mistake: "BARON HARRIES OF PENTREGARTH, of Pentregarth, of Ceinewydd in the County of Dyfed". See the discussion.

It's strange that such a large number of sources should get it wrong. It suggests it was publicised wrongly at some point. As you say, present version of this page is correct. JRawle (Talk) 13:02, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I did not see this article mention that Richard Harries sometimes does Thought for the Day. Education and army career[edit]

The reserve is the Territorial Army, so how can he have transferred from one to the other?
