Hi Rydel,

If you look at Category:Athletes you will see that all athletes are categorised under sub-categories of Category:name of country athletes|surname, first name. It appeared sensible to keep this consistent style and create Category:Belarusian athletes. You will see that this category is a sub-category of Category:Belorusian sportspeople the same as all other Category:name of country athletes are.Scraggy4 13:25, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

All right. Thanks for explaining I can see some advantages and disadvantages.

Your way of additional categories is very well-suited for those countries, for which there is already plenty of information about their sportsmen and athletes. So in order, to avoid having huge number of names, it makes sense to make those categories.

In case of Belarus I think there are now bio's of 3-4 people, and maybe in the next year or two someone will write another dozen entries. I don't think it EVER will be bigger than 15-20 people. So creating additional categories for us is actually going to DECREASE usability. First of all, there will be no single list of all sportspeople. Second, for each sportsperson you will NEED to know which sport is she/he in. And then you will always have to make additional clicks.

Yes, I am still relatively new here, so you probably know the rules better. But purely from common sense or/and usability standpoint, I don't see any reason for deeper categorization.

What I would suggest is that she is added to List of Belarusians, which is linked from the main Belarus page, and put into Category:Belarusian athletes so that anybody looking at Category:Athletes would not think that Belarus had no athletes???Scraggy4 14:44, 24 Aug 2004 (UTC)

NBC on Nesterenko[edit]

Dear Cantus, the ignorance is that Minsk is a capital of Belarus, and Julia Nesterenko is a Belarusan athlete. "Confusing" countries like that is an offence to a 10 million nation. As for the Reuters I think it's MSNBC's fault. When I searched news.google.com, I saw that this Reuter's item was reprinted by 10 different media (including CNN and several Australian newspapers). And out of 10 reprints, nine had "Minsk, Belarus" and "Belarusan athelete"... While MSNBC totally screwed up.
