"Racist slurs"[edit]

For the purposes of maintaining objectivity in this article, can we please agree that francophone is not a race but a language, therefore shouting "fucking french" to a ref is not "racist", just insulting? Calling someone a "fucking moron" doesn't mean you are anti-moron, it means you are unhappy with someone who is a moron.

Reordering sections[edit]

I re-ordered the sections so that Trivia is last and I moved Controversy up under Playing Career and above statistics. This appears consistent with the order used for Rocket Richard Canuckle 19:42, 15 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

One sided[edit]

I have a few problems with the last paragraph of the “Controversy” section. It seems to present only one point of view on the story and has some useless passages:

“On the May 2, 2007 edition of Hockey Night in Canada’s Coach’s Corner on CBC, Don Cherry called the affair ridiculous.” So? How is he an expert on this issue? Any opinion other than that one would have been surprising from Don Cherry.

“This silenced many of the politicians who called into question his captaincy.” Not in Quebec. Articles in the press and comments on talk shows continued to be critical of the choice of Doan as a captain after that game (example: http://www.cyberpresse.ca/article/20070506/CPSPORTS01/705060627/-1/CPSPORTS01) Remember that no one ever questioned Doan’s talent as a hockey player.

"(…) editorials said that Doan deserved the nation's thanks for maintaining a "picture of grace" and pulling the team together." The choice of this sentence to end the paragraph shows a bias.

The article doesn’t to present the refs’ (Michel Cormier) side of the story: he claims that during a game in Montreal, someone from Phoenix’s bench yelled out “Fucking Frenchmen” at him (everyone agrees that this took place). He skated over and told the Phoenix coach to tell his players to refrain form these types of comments. Later in the game, Cormier alleges Doan, still angry at a call, skated over and repeated the insult. Doan admits he said something that suggested that four French Canadian refs officiating in Montreal must be biased. He only denies he used the work “fucking”.

In French Canada, the controversy evolved from a modest annoyance at the choice of Doan as captain of Team Canada in spite of the alleged events, to anger at the league’s rapid dismissal of the accusation despite the lack of proof either way. This annoyance grew with the reaction in the English Canadian press that unanimously sided with Doan and dismissed the French Canadian press’s questioning as mere separatist dribble. 207.236.152.194 20:12, 11 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Suggestion[edit]

I suggest that the "Controversy" section be rewritten as follows:

Doan was accused of making an ethnic slur against francophones uttered to a linesman at a Phoenix Coyotes / Montreal Canadiens game in Montreal on December 13, 2005. He received a 10 minute game misconduct penalty during the game; however, the NHL later investigated the allegation and cleared Doan.

The game’s ref (Michel Cormier) claims that during that game in Montreal, someone from Phoenix’s bench yelled out “Fucking Frenchmen” at him. He skated over and told the Phoenix coach to tell his players to refrain form these types of comments. Later in the game, Cormier alleges Doan, still angry at a call, skated over and repeated the insult. Doan admits he said something that suggested that four French Canadian refs officiating in Montreal must be biased. He only denies he used the work “fucking”.

When Doan was selected for the 2006 Olympics Canadian national men's hockey team, Canadian Liberal MP Denis Coderre wrote a letter to Hockey Canada president Bob Nicholson asking to remove Doan from the team unless Doan apologizes for the alleged comment of December 13, 2005.[1] In January 2006, Doan filed a lawsuit against Coderre for defamation seeking $250,000 in damages and promising to contribute any damage awards to charity.[2] Coderre filed a counter-suit in April 2007, seeking $45,000 in damages. These cases are still before the courts.

When Doan was selected as captain on the 2007 Canadian national men's hockey team, a Canadian Official Languages parliamentary committee led by the Quebec separatist party Bloc Quebecois,[3] and supported by all political parties, demanded Hockey Canada appear before the committee to explain their decision to name Doan as captain in light of the alleged comment made on December 13, 2005.[4] Critics say the committee is trying to exploit differences between anglophones and francophones in vote-rich Quebec, making Doan a political victim. Hockey Canada officials appeared before the committee on May 3, 2007 defending Doan as their choice, citing the NHL had cleared him of the allegations.[6]

Modification[edit]

The controversy section was modified but it is just as subjective and biased as before! This sentence in particular is completely subjective: "Doan has led an examplary life both on and off the ice, and this whole controversy doesn't seem to fit at all with Shane Doan's character." Says who?!
