Draft Bust[edit]

Does the "biggest bust" claim really need official citation? Considering a) he was hyped as the new, improved Wayne Gretzky, b) he was drafted over Pronger and Kariya, who are bonafide superstars and c) he hyped HIMSELF up beyond all recognition and d) his NHL career tanked badly, you'd be hard-pressed to find someone who's a bigger bust.

Yes it does. See WP:VERIFY. With regards to some of your points, I've never heard him compared to Gretzky - even when the "Daigle Derby" was going on between Ottawa and San Jose for the first overall pick - and certainly not as an improved Gretzky. "Best french player since Mario" was closer to the truth. Hard Pressed to find bigger busts? The names roll off the tongue. Brian Lawton (#1 in '83) who was drafted ahead of 3 HOFers in Pat LaFontaine, Steve Yzerman, and Cam Neely (not to mention Claude Lemieux, Esa Tikkanen and Tom Barrasso too). Doug Wickenheiser (#1 in '80), drafted ahead of HOFer's Denis Savard, Larry Murphy and Paul Coffey. Greg Joly (#1 in '74) picked first ahead of Clark Gillies, Bryan Trottier, and Mark Howe. Even Joe Murphy (#1 in '86), picked by Detroit who passed on Brian Leetch, Vincent Damphousse, Adam Graves and Teppo Numminen would get some arguments as a bigger bust. And if you want a more recent bust - what about Patrick Stefan (guy who missed the empty net on a breakaway against the Oilers a few weeks back)? Picked ahead of the Sedin twins and Martin Havlat. Stefan's best season in Atlanta got him 40 points. Yes, Daigle was one of the most hyped 1st overall picks and was a bust - no doubt about it. However, he still lead his team in scoring once, and did play more than one season. Many 1st overall picks did not even do that (Brien Taylor immediately comes to mind) and I didn't even get into football, basketball or baseball. Edmonton[edit]

I've removed the listing of Edmonton as one of Daigle's teams. As Daigle was acquired by Edmonton from Philadelphia, but right away he was flipped to Tampa Bay. Opinions? Yankees76 19:39, 6 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
