His date is correct, but incorrect is 1967.

The entry is correct; Joshua Bell's birth year is, indeed, 1967.

I'll look for something more recent. Don't know how much luck I will have. I've seen Bell in concert several times and met him afterwards. No stage makeup, regular street clothes. He really does look that young. -- SweetTalker 20:11, 15 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Religion[edit]

Please balance Bell's heritage from his mother with the mention of his heritage from his father, which has been (?unconsciously) erased by its nonmention. As he provided the soundtrack to the movie "The Red Violin" which was nominated for an Oscar for "best foreign film (Canada)", shouldn't this be mentioned? Canking 21:16, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Actually, Bell did not provide the score to "The Red Violin", composer John Corigliano did. Bell was the solo violinist and received screen credit for his work for "The Red Violin". However, his work to the soundtrack was a major contribution for which he has received much acclaim, a personal 'shout out' if you will by Corgiliano when accepting the Academy Award for the score for the film and other credit so it should be noted it not already. SweetTalker 20:15, 15 March 2007 (UTC) Bell is not a changed name. Bell's father, the late Dr. Alan P. Bell was professor emeritus at Indiana University and a former Kinsey researcher. It is common knowledge that Dr. Bell was an Episcopalian minister before meeting Bell's mother who was and is Jewish. Dr. Bell converted to Judaism and Joshua Bell considers his heritage as Jewish. Dr. Alan and Dr. Shirley Bell's academic credentials as well as Joshua Bell's personal status as an umarried man are well known and documented several times so the constant deletion is puzzling.[reply]

Shirley Bell is not a "Dr." Alan Bell never converted to Judaism.

Dr. Shirley Bell IS a Dr, however she told me personally after one of her son's concerts that she does not like to be called Dr. Bell "Just Shirley is ok".

Dr. Alan P. Bell did convert to Judaism and the Bell children were raised Jewish.

Well, I'm a family member and SHE IS NOT A DR.!!! She has a masters degree. Nor did Alan convert, nor were the children raised Jewish.

Just as any idiot with access to a mouth and computer can make unsubstantiated claims. Alan would laugh at the thought of his being anything but an embrasser of all religions. But converting to Judaism, never. He was an Episcopal priest first and always.

Embrasser is not a word in the English language. I think you meant to say "embracer". Also, you must not have read the Jewish Journal from Oct. 2006 in which Bell clearly talks about his Jewish heritage, his being raised Jewish and has been known on at least one account of making a joke about never having his own bar mitzvah.

I read the article. Joshua does not say he is Jewish, as much as you wish he was. He is proud of both his parents and their heritages. You can argue that you're her pal, but why would her pal come here and insist that her children are not Jewish. Since I do not practice the Jewish faith, I am puzzled as to why you think I wish that Joshua was. I find your comment "as much as you wish he was" and your vehemence that Joshua Bell is not Jewish to be very disturbing.[reply]

SweetTalker: Until you showed you face, I had never in any manner or converstaion or any way ever heard Shirley refered to as "Dr.". And I have known her for more than 30 years. Can you say the same? I didn't think so. You state that her "Dr." status is well documented. Please site your source(s). Ditto for your Jewish fantasy. Please define "being Jewish" as more than just a publicity statement in this instance. I consider myself more Jewish (and I am Jewish) than those to whom you proscribe such attachments. Bell has never lowered himself to using publicity stunts and I fail to see where professing the Jewish faith has become that. Anyone in the classical music circles refers to his parents at Dr. Anyone in classical music circles knows he's Jewish and that Dr. Shirley Bell is Jewish. They also know Joshua is a new father. Ridiculously long quote removed[edit]

There was no reason to include the entirety of Bell's "open letter" from his website. Most of it was minutiae ("Thanks to my fans"). The only notable material was about the unconventional parenting arrangement with his former girlfriend, and that was completely redundant with the quote from the BBC interview. —johndburger 03:07, 30 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Assessment[edit]

I have reassessed this article as a "start" article. Although there are quite a few refs, there are large swaths of the article that are entirely unreferenced, there is a long "discography" list of recordings that did not chart, and there is hardly any information about Bell's major performances with major orchestras. -- Ssilvers (talk) 04:05, 29 April 2012 (UTC)[reply]

School name[edit]

There may be some Wikipedia policy on this of which I am unaware, but when Josh Bell attended IU, it was still called the Indiana University School of Music. It wasn't renamed as the Jacobs School of Music until many years later. I am not at all sure this even matters. Cynwolfe (talk) 15:57, 7 May 2018 (UTC)[reply]
