David, someone recreated a page Utilisateur:Davidcannon on Fy:, the Frisian Wikipedia. "Utilisateur" does not mean anything in Frisian, and it certainly is not a namespace. (It probably is a namespace on Fr:, the French Wikipedia, though.) As a result, this page appears in the encyclopedia space in the Frisian Wikipedia. If you mistakenly (re)created this page, would you please limit yourself to fy:Brûker:Davidcannon, except to indicate that fy:Utilisateur:Davidcannon can be discarded? Your edit has been reverted[edit]

Hi. You changed a link on Wikipedia:Offline reports/This is one of the most linked to redirect pages to bypass a redirect which normally I have no problem with. However, the links on this page should not be "fixed" manually. I have thus reverted your edit. My bot (CanisRufus) also did the same thing of which I immediately reverted and changed the script to skip this page. Lala Sukuna[edit]

Hi David. I noticed you reverted my edit on the Lala Sukuna article. There is actually no such thing as a "Commander (or Knight) of the British Empire". The full titles are Commander / Knight Commander of the Most Excellent Order of the British Empire; ie they are members of the Order, not the Empire. In most articles, these are abreviated to CBE, KBE, or whatever. Something such as " he was made a Commander of the Order of the British Empire ..." is generally accepted and reads better than the abreviation. Steve Sc147 20:45, 28 Jan 2005 (UTC)

Thanks for stating your reasons, David. I hope you don't think I'm too forward in replying to your concerns on your personal talk page.

Firstly, although an admin should not have more say in deciding image policy, I understand your feelings about this because admins do tend to be more highly respected and some people are more likely to be influenced by what they say.

Secondly I'd like to point out my actual record with respect to controversial images. I have only ever inlined the image on clitoris once, and this in support of the consensus which was decided by vote. I strongly oppose edit warring and voluntary undertook during the course of negotations with one of the few remaining diehard opponents of inlining that image that, if removed or linked, I would not restore it.

The same applies to the autofellatio image. I converted it from a link to an inline on January 6th, and have not done so again.

So while it is true that I explore the boundaries of image policy, I would argue that I do so responsibly. I have never edit warred on Wikipedia, and I would never edit war, and certainly not over a controversial image. --Tony Sidaway|Talk 12:40, 7 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Hello. I wonder if you can provide a source for the following fact you have recently introduced (in the form of a minor edit summarized as "slight rearranging") in the Jay Warren article: "Warren took up his duties on Christmas Day, when he returned from Tahiti". I cannot confirm this even with specialized Pitcairn Island websites. All I can find is, as the article had previously said, that he was expected to return around Christmas, but no report that he actually has returned on Christmas Day. 68.127.43.33 16:14, 12 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Your recent edit concerning the seemingly irrelevant hidden information which you removed, and the relevant information you re-displayed, was quite correct. It was an organizational mistake which caused me to misplace the beginning of the hidden reference character, thereby hiding that important sentence regarding Syrian troop levels at the time of the first demonstrations, which was my own contribution. User:24.30.67.158[edit]

David, I see you blocked User:24.30.67.158 indefinitely for anti-Semitism and vandalism. I had already blocked him for 12 hours, because I was worried it was a public library or similar, and I thought we weren't allowed to block IP addresses indefinitely. When you're facing a situation like this one with an IP address, how do you decide how long the block should be? I've only just become an admin so any advice about this would be very much appreciated, because I'd have liked to block him longer myself. SlimVirgin (talk) 01:47, Apr 21, 2005 (UTC)

Thank you for your helpful explanation, David. You're right that it's more art than science, and I appreciate your advice very much. I was worried that my 12-hour block of 24.30.67.158 might have cancelled yours out, as I believe the shorter block prevails, so I went back today and reblocked it indefinitely again just to make sure.     • They are not the same user. The IP's are totally different. Also, I believe that user you refer to is not vandalizing, but SlimVirgin has harassed and slurred that user on many occasions SlimVirgin has received a great deal of criticism as an Administrator on Discussion pages. Please review.

To clarify my remark: I think I now understand why you didn't vote in the other section. You wanted the language names in English (e.g., Finnish, not Suomi), not just the transliterated versions of the names sorted based on English alphabetical order (e.g., Suomi before Svenska). IMO the page needs a complete overhaul and a new vote (unless it's already been voted on elsewhere) to separate the issues of how the names are displayed (entire list in current Wikipedia's language, or each individual language name displayed in its own language) and the order in which they are listed... But I know this isn't the place to discuss this... OBTW, you might be interested in an interlanguage page I'm making up for my own use. - dcljr 03:40, 23 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Request for help[edit]

As you are an admin. I was hoping you could give me some help. It all started when I posted a noted on a wiki called Global Elite Wiki that they needed to liscence articles from wikipedia. A few days later I was accused of threatening the site of copyright infingement. The person who made this threat has since somehow come up with the notion that I am the same person as User:SqueakBox, who she has serrious beef with. He has reported some of her actions here: Wikipedia:Requests for comment/Cumbey. She also claims that he has been abusing her, but I have seen no evidence of this. She has also been posting on her blog that I am Wicked and a member of the Bohemian Grove (which doesn't actually have membership) and I think she also redered to me as a member of the Illuminati? [2]. I also have good reason to believe that she has been vandalising Hierarchypedia. All I wish is for her to know that I am not SqueakBox, so she will leave me alone, and stop dragging my name through the mud. One of her friends, who coincidently I have been in contact with in the past has told her I am not SqueakBox, but it doesn't seem to have registered. I would warn you that by trying to prove to her that I am not SqueakBox, you may also be named as a Wikipedia:Sockpuppet.

(earlier) Hi David, SB here. I just want to confirm I am not User:Cumbey. Please withdraw your allegations. As I have a longer edit history than she does these allegations should be directed at me. She had put this statement on her talk page as 68.61.150.80. I moved it to her user page because I thought she had got her pages muddled up (which she had). I may have been wrong to do so but I acted in good faith. Cumbey dislikes me because I removed her beast thesis from Javier Solana, so I could not be in any circimstances be her sockpuppet. My Solana edits have removed her POV that Solana is so powerful he threatens American intersts in the Mediterranean, etc because I am pro European integration (though astong NPOV believer too). I am English, write in English and about England as well as about Central America and Rastafari, write articles that prove my command of Spanish, have my photo on my User page, use a fixed Honduras IP address (63.245.57.201), etc. See User:SqueakBox/Personal info. I reckon User:Guettarda and User:Hajor would vouch for my genuiness, to the point of not being Cumbey, anyway, based on their knowing my edits. I have a good record here of anti-vandalism, stopping the Popes being page protected in those critical moments, whereas other than one series of edits at Apostasy recently Cumbey only ever writes about Solana related subjects. She doesn't appear to know how to work the wikipedia system, as I said to Hierarchypedia. KC9CQJ has spoken to me, and will doubtless confirm I am English from my accent. Cumbey and I have an intense relationship, but as antagonists who share an interest in Solana (mine since getting involved in the page at the end of Feb). Thanks for the speedy reply. Her books do seem over the top. Thanks for the information on Cumey's user page. I think the best solution would be to ignore both of them.

No problem. I changed it to Hierarchypedia now; I am not sure why I put the capital P in. It hasn't really grown much though. There is one person I have been in contact with from the University of Wisconsin-Madison who has written some huge articles. Although they contain a lot of POV, which I have been removing. Search engine rankings were also damaged when the hosting company "went under." Although they are climbing again now, and the Jay Van Andel page is one of the top ten search engine phrase referrals. It is just a question of trying to get more editors in. It doesn't look like it will be overtaking SourceWatch (disinfopedia) just yet :P, but most of the articles there are simply copy and pasted, and in my view pointless. Hierarchypedia also has pages on dates, which are usefull for enlarging the number of articles. --Hierarchypedia 16:12, 26 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Fiji's Father[edit]

Do you have some reference to confirm your edit on Father of the Nation for Fiji? Are all three persons really so important? Two of them died only recently and their historical notability isn't likely established.

There are different opinions on the whole page Father of the Nation. I myself prefere to keep it small, with only those names clearly established in given country and well documented but quite many people tend to add as many names as they could come up with. Anon block[edit]

The anon evading an earlier block may indicate the range it came from is used by a company. You don't know whether that computer is for public use. In general we don't block anon IPs permanently.

If there's a need, please open a request to the arbitration committee. Please don't block IPs permanently, also protecting the user page wasn't really necessary. Some vandals like to post on that page in case they return which makes it easy to catch them. I'm going to reblock for a month and unprotect the page. If you disagree with me, please come to my talk page and discuss it.

Names[edit]

I noticed you had a question on Dehumanizer's talk. As he didn't answer, I'll give you the info:

In Portugal the names are given at registration after birth and are usually left unchange thereafter. The most common way of naming someone is:

OwnName1 OwnName2 Mother'sLastName Father'sLastName

this can be given in another order (Father's last name 1st) but is unusual today.

sometimes the grand-parents names are also used:

OwnName1&2 Mother's2LastNames Father's2LastNames

In rarer instances the godfather's last name might be given (I don't know how common this is but my own last name came from my gandfather's godfather)

Sometimes a person might choose to be called by the family name: José Manuel Durão Barroso was known in Portugal as Durão Barroso. This is common amongst buiness men, especially if not from a family lineage which would impose the need to use a a first name to distinguish from other (older) syblings.

Request for Assistance: ADMINISTRATOR ABUSE: Administrator Mustafaa is a Wiki Terrorist[edit]

Asking for assistance regarding Administrator Mustafaa and editor Yuber:

Yuber has been cited before for violating 3RR policies, now the editor teams up with Mustafaa to continue violating 3RR policies.

Regarding the page and edits to Islamic Terrorism, Administrator Mustafaa acts as the police to this page to ensure that his biased POV is inserted. He was called in by Yuber to revert my edit, which was balanced, an improvement, and entirely without a POV (as are all my edits). They worked to team up to ensure that only their biased POV is inserted. Mustafaa then blocked me, in the process breaking many Wiki policies. Basically Mustafaa ‘s reactionary vandalism and his act of blocking me was an act of Wiki terrorisim.

Administrator Mustafaa broke many of Wiki policies:

1. Abuse of Administratorship: Most important is that Mustafaa has an obvious POV and abuses his Administratorship to ensure that his POV is inserted into his favorite articles.

2. Edit Abuse: Mustafaa (and Yuber) made a reactionary rv revert of the entire article instead of simply making one simple correction, the only correction that they disagreed with.

3. Edit Abuse: Unlike what they stated, there has been no previous discussion of this issue. The only previous discussion concerned their own sensitivity to the term. The term “Islamic Terrorism” is the term used by the West and it is the term being described. I provided a source (and there would be tens of thousands of sources, because this is the proper term in the West. I accurately described the dispute that some Muslims have over a term used in the West.

4. Violating blocking Policy: Use of blocks to gain advantage in a content dispute, and self-blocking to enforce a Wikiholiday or departure are specifically prohibited. Likewise, users should not block those with whom they are currently engaged in conflict.

5. Violating blocking Policy: logged-in users with a substantial history of valid contributions, regardless of the reasoning for the block should not be blocked.

6. Violating blocking Policy: the 3RR policy is not to be used to deal with vandalism as mine was of Mustafaa and Yuber vandalism.

7. Violating blocking Policy: Mustafaa made no warnings, he just wanted to protect his POV.

I believe that I have made significant contributions to Wiki and I very greatly object to 2 people teaming up to block me out of the system so that they can insert their POV.

These people are doing a real disservice to Wiki, and I can think of no worse vandalism than they have done:

I think Administrators like Mustafaa are dangerous for Wiki, especially when they are so willing to violate Wiki policy to insert their POV.

So, I would appreciate any information and assistance you can provide to Noitall. Thank you.

Wikinews:Fiji[edit]

Hello,I wanted to let you know that Fiji is the Country of the Week on Wikipedia's sister project Wikinews. Many countries suffer severe under representation on Wikinews. Country of the Week is an attempt to slove this problem. Every week we pick a country that has no stories written about it and try to write as many stories as we can about the country. Well, sometimes it does and sometimes it doesn't, depending on whether they have a dynamic or static IP. In the dynamic case, there isn't a whole lot of point in blocking it; they'll just log off and log on and start with a new IP. Anyway, I've seen plenty of cases where anonymous vandals were first warned, then told they had been blocked, on their talk page. Three recent examples. I think it's probably more edifying to explain what brought on the block, instead of just leaving them to make their best guess. Lebanese Forces[edit]

Hi there,

I'm sorry to break into your busy schedule, but could you please have a look at the Lebanese Forces article. A new user named User:Usurp, who claims to run the official Lebanese Forces website, has tried to rewrite the article to promote the party's propaganda. I told him that we cannot have POV on Wikipedia. I agreed with a lot of the POV by the way, but it is not acceptable material for Wikipedia. He refused to accept that, and for the last 48 hours, he and I have been constantly reverting and counter-reverting each other. Now, I'd be the last to claim that my version is perfectly correct. But his version is POV which is not even subtle. As of this moment, the version that's "up" is mostly mine, but by the time you read this, it will probably be his again.

I think that you, being Lebanese, would have a more objective understanding that I have of the article, and I will defer to your judgement. I'm sending an identical message to User:Cedar-Guardian. Re: Klingon Wikipedia[edit]

If you try to edit any page at the Klingon Wikipedia, you'll get a "Database locked" message, saying "This wiki has been closed for now. (Move to WikiCities?)" As it turns out, however, it was still functional on August 1, since the last edit occurred on August 2. I haven't checked the mailing list to find out what exactly is going on, but I guess next month's statistic will have to say "closed." Re: Khmer Wikipedia[edit]

If by "counter" you mean the output of {{NUMBEROFARTICLES}}, then yes, it's possible to figure out those Khmer numerals by pasting them into a Unicode lookup tool like Ian Hickson's Unicode Character Identifier, which will tell you what each digit means in Khmer.

According to Cumbey today she has just left. I certainly took your note to her asking her to remove them into account. I had already moved most before today but she did not revert herself today, maybe meaning she is okay with it (assuming she has noticed). I applied for mediation with her but initially nobody wanted to take the case up until I created the Rfc. Having withdrawn the Rfc I don't want to put it back up again. I am happy to engage in mediation if she is. What I have done may be wrong but I hope nobody will undo it, especially as the mention of me 13 times doers show an unhealthy obsession with me, and especially as she has threatemed to call the police in on me here in Honduras for imaginary crimes such as computer hacking. I believe the best option is to leave things be, as anything else will just open up old wounds. It may be important for you to know that User:Lulu of the Lotus-Eaters has a history of confrontational behaviour when editing articles. I have tried reasoning with him on the Christian Laypeople discussion page but I'm fairly sure that he won't budge.

If the guy is from the US he may go to bed soon and I will revert all the changes again. Not a solution by any means, but I have asked him to do the hard work of researching each name before he deletes them - which is obviously something that can only benefit the article.

I'm fairly sure that he won't listen to our protestations or reasoning, and he will continue to edit the article in a very unhelpful way. I think one solution may be one of those complaints pages - especially considering the amount of damage he's caused to other contributors.

What One Salient Oversight has asked is for me to prove a negative. If someone is not on the list, they must be shown affirmatively to not be a born-again Christian according to this perverse procedure. Obviously, it is logically impossible to prove a negative.
If there is such ready evidence in OSO's mind that the figures moved to the talk page really are born-again Christians, it should be very simple to just add a footnote link supporting it, then put them back with the evidence. There has not been anything on the discussion page to indicate that the factual accuracy is no longer disputed. In point of fact, I continue to believe that a large percentage of the listed names are factually incorrect. This includes some that continue to contain prima facie negative evidence on the talk page, as well as the bulk of the names in other categories, where I have not had a chance to attempt either positive or negative validation. Removing a disputed tag without consensus is a clear policy violation; if continued, I'll probably first attempt to get the page locked pending provision of evidence, but other action might be appropriate too. I do not believe that your behavior has shown even a modicum of the good faith that I know I must assume per WP:FAITH. My concern, in apparent contrast with yours, is in improving the quality of the page at issue, so that it might eventually approach encyclopedic quality. It falls pitifully short of academic standards as is. Certainly not the only page with such lacunae, but it's in the batch.
Frankly, I think locking the page by a neutral administrator is an excellent idea at this point, since you have explicitly refused to cooperate on providing evidence for names listed. There are a very large percentage of errors there now, but at least no more errors could be added while it was locked (unless you abuse your admin powers to add whatever names you felt like, throwing citation to the wind).
I think getting an arbitrator to step in is a good idea too. What I'd really like to obtain in such arbitration is a commitment by long-term editors to start treating the page as is it were an encyclopedia article: i.e. something that requires evidentiary support for listing names, not merely whim and fancy, nor even "trust us, we know it in our hearts (even if we don't document it on the page)."
And yeah, I guess I get more pissed off at being insulted and threatened than I probably should. I can accept that is a character flaw of mine. But at the same time, I value encyclopedic quality, so cannot dismiss the implication completely, since the schoolyard bullying amounts to "let us continue to violate WP:V and WP:NPOV." You might be interested in checking out the overheated dispute regarding the Bob Dylan page, where user: Lulu takes an opposite position regarding what sort of evidence is required to support his comments regarding religious behavior -- insisting that "common knowledge" is enough to support an assertion, and that pointing to clearly sourced, expressly contrary comments in published works is "pedantic." I found your response to user:JDG extremely irresponsible. The behavior of Wikithugs and Wikitrolls is unavoidable, but it's really inappropriate to encourage them like your comments did. I've done my best to take Wikipedia's guidelines seriously, especially NPOV and verifiability. Hello, David. Thanks for adding quotes by various notable Fijians to Wikiquote, it is much appreciated. However, I noticed that you tend not to follow the recommended formatting (as can be seen in q:Wikiquote:Templates/People) in several places:

  • Name should be in bold
  • Quotes should be divided into sourced/attributed. If all the quotes are sourced, just open a level-2 header "Sourced", and various sources can be level-3 headers.
  • Quotes should generally not include quote marks.
  • If you want to put in the "wikipedia box", please open a level-2 section "External links" and put it there. There are many reasons for that, among others is that it tends to screw up formatting otherwise.

I am sorry, my English is not so perfect. I thought the numbers are for whole Fiji. Its clear now with 99%Christians in native Fijians population, but what means next two numbers? Is it that 76,7% Indo-fijians are Hindu religion? Or is that number for ethnic Fijians, but it means that they changed their religion from 1996.

Um... if there are 6 articles, where are they?? I'd really like to see them... All I can see from http://aa.wikipedia.org/wiki/Special:Allpages is 3 listings: the Main page, and a couple empty pages... So that's what I mean by the counter is broken... The reason most wikis have a discrepancy, is because there are usually many MORE articles on "allpages" than the "numberofpages", because there are also listed all the redirects and pages without links.
But there's something really really strange going on with this wiki, because I assure you, there are NO articles to be seen anywhere on it, zilch... not even redirects or pages without links... Just two completely blank pages... The only articles there ever were, were all deleted long ago, as they were vandals' jokes... So the correct number should be 0 and not 6, and not just for November, but for every month... OK, I did leave her a note telling her about the broken counter, but what I was really hoping to accomplish is actually more your department... namely, could the statistics and rankings all be recalculated for each month, using the correct figure "0 articles" for Afar, instead of the incorrect figure "6"??? Well, Angela's only suggestion was for me to report it to bugzilla... That's a lot more trouble than it's worth, and I don't really care about fixing the bug that much anyway, so much as I care about fixing the stats... So, if you don't take my word for it there are no pages anywhere to be found, please try clicking aa:Special:Longpages, aa:Special:Shortpages, aa:Special:Ancientpages, or whatever... Going by the deletion log, 22 pages were cut from the mainspace in April, and 2 in August, which wouldn't account for the numbers on the statistics pages whatsoever... The two deleted in August were also created in August, so taking that into consideration, I think you can safely "zero out" all the numbers for Afar for every month from July through the present... I agree. I removed the comment from the announcements page because it did not have a cite to support it. Serious claims need serious evidence, and cites to back them up. That's what I'm here for.  :-) After looking at the Ethnologue entry, I think it bears further investigation, since Ethnologue makes it appear that Rotuman is more closely related to Fijian than to other Polynesian languages...which is the exact opposite of everything else I've read. I just read through your userpage and thought I'd mention that about a year after you started working on Fiji, I started working on the Marquesas Islands... School and a [now moribund] relationship have severely reduced my free time, but I'm hoping to get back to that part of WP sometime soon. Help needed at Potter's House Christian Fellowship[edit]

Hi David. I'm having a battle with a guy who is a member of the PH who will not tolerate much in the way of criticism of his church. I wrote an expanded section that gave a fairly balanced view of whether the church is "cult-like" or not but he has removed it. We are in an edit war as we speak. Can you please look at the section that I wrote and decide for yourself whether it is okay... and then try to address the PH member's (User:CFMKEV) concerns. Everything I write is about something that interests me, so in one sense every article is special. There are, however, a few articles I've worked on that I am particularly proud of.

The article about Ratu Mara appeared on the Main Page, at the time of his death in April 2004. This was the first time one of my articles appeared there.

I first wrote the Christianity in Korea article as a university assignment back in 1988. It was one of the few things that I ever got Grade A for. Only a minor update was required to turn it into a Wikipedia article.
