Hi Joel, I must thank you instead. You did the brunt of the work improving the R. St. Barbe Baker article. He was indeed a great person. I definitely know that you were not trying to leave out the Baha'i Faith, as it still is a relatively obscure religion to most, so no worries.

It's wonderful that you are so active in trying to better the world we live in. I really wish we had more people who were more concerned with the environment. While, I'm not an environmentalist by profession, I do try to do my small part in helping the environment. I think, generally most Baha'is, are concerned with the environment and see the exploitation of our planetary natural resources as one of the symptoms of an overly materialistic society, that only considers short-term economic growth, and does not benefit all of humanity, and cannot concern itself with the long-term viability of life on earth.

Sustainable Fisheries[edit]

Hi Joel. Regarding sustainable fisheries, there are few good examples in the world to point to and industrial fishing, with sein purse nets and long-lines are particularly damaging to the environment. The Australian government has been particularly concerned with the poaching of Patagonian tooth fish (see article at http://www.aad.gov.au/default.asp?casid=11981) and also with the taking of sharks fins, trochus shells and beche la mer (Sea cucumbers) by Indonesian craft, operating for Chinese syndicates in the north.

Australia detains 200 Indonesian fishermen

PERTH, Australia, Oct. 20 (UPI) -- Australia has detained more than 200 Indonesian fishermen caught poaching for shark fins for Chinese-owned companies, The Australian reported Thursday.

The fishermen are being held in a makeshift detention camp at the northwest port of Broome, the report said.

In the latest incident Tuesday, Australian Customs officers battled fishermen wielding knives and machetes, who set fire to their boat in an attempt to prevent the officers from boarding it. The officers found two holds full of shark fins and the carcasses of about 50 sharks.

The fishermen are paid around $45 a month by Chinese-owned fishing syndicates, and will likely have to pay for their lost boats on top of the fines they must pay Australia, a lawyer who is defending 15 fishermen told a Perth court Wednesday.

Legal Aid lawyer David McKenzie said each of his clients was their family's breadwinner, with up to seven children to support.

The men were fined between $1,500 and $5,000 by the court.

Australia initiated a crackdown on foreign fishing boats after news reports that they were coming closer to the northern coast, raising fears of disease as some crews were said to be setting up camp and bringing animals ashore.

To deal with these issues the Australian government have just tightened up the Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act 1999 (EPBC Act) which means that the Australian Government can now play a stronger role in promoting ecologically sustainable management of fisheries and assessing their environmental performance. We have one of the few remaining sustainable fisheries on the planet.

This is partly due to the work in Australia of the very active Australian Marine Fisheries Conservation Society that play a very important role.

As for what is happening elsewhere I can remember reading that 17 of the 19 major world fisheries are collapsing through overfishing. Pretty grim.

According to policy, we should move userboxes that did not say about language capabilities to User: namespace. I'm happy to see, that this solution has been copied from German Wikipedia, because I found it faster than other English Wikipedia users, and created my userboxes in Polish Wikipedia in User: namespace. License tagging for Image:SD Quintet.jpg[edit]

Peak oil[edit]

TRUE Scary isn't it? Fifty years ago the world was consuming 4 billion barrels of oil per year and the average discovery was around 30 billion. Today we consume 30 billion barrels per year (84 million barrels of oil per day) and the discovery rate is now approaching 4 billion barrels of crude oil per year (11 million barrels of oil per day). 84/11 = 7.6 Kjell Aleklett The oil supply tsunami alert Energy Bulletin, April 25, 2005. The difference is being made up from draining known reserves (since production = consumption right now).

This is well oil - "crude". Unconventional oil is often in the form of tar sands and shale and to date still very difficult to extract. Hello Joel. A rather belated reply on referencing. I cannot give any definitive answer to your questions. It is difficult to juggle layout for best appearance with how to accurately give sources of info. In the article in question I went for appearance over accurate placement of references. I think that as long as the references are there and accurately quoted and analysed the job is done. I suspect the majority of WP readers want the info itself rather than the refs so I edit pages for the readers who are not chasing refs. Apparently there will be a Wikimedia revision that allows blocks of text to be easily referenced. Ben and Jock had a warm relationship with him, and I was with them at conferences on a couple of occasions where I witnessed Jack's respect for them, and their enjoyment of him. Robert S de Ropp[edit]

Hi. I came upon the name of a child called Bobby de Ropp as part of a study I was doing, and was intrigued when I found the Wiki article which had to be about the same person - which then referred only to his later writings on human potential. Further surprise when I discovered a completely different angle in his academic career and work which was not then included in the article. I was puzzled because he disappeared off the radar inexplicably between childhood and his academic career. Add to that the mysterious Baron de Ropp who seemed to be the most likely candidate to be his father. Had I sent off for Warriors Way instead of The Master Game, all would have been explained. However by digging around I have come up with some independent corroboration of his autobio. So I am most grateful to you for bringing WW to my attention and I now have a copy. And remain astounded by his fascinating life. Ironical that he nearly committed suicide in Australia by trying to drown in the harbour, and eventually did die by drowning. Hi Joel, got your email. I prefer communicating on-wiki unless privacy issues are involved. I sent you this message because marking an edit minor is only for things like spelling, grammar and formatting corrections. You added an entire paragraph with citations, from what I can tell. I haven't evaluated the content, but because some editors exclude minor edits from their watchlist, minor edits might not be seen by as many editors. For a true minor edit, this is not an issue. Marking major edits minor is sometimes used by editors who would like their edit to receive less scrutiny from other editors. I'm sure this is not the case for you, that you were just unaware how marking an edit minor was supposed to be used. So it's just a informational message about how and when to mark an edit minor. Fisheries management[edit]

Yes, you're right, it is not clear so I've reworded it. What is meant is something like the maximum sustainable yield. If fisheries are run down by harvesting too many, you come to a point of diminishing returns where the amount you can continue to harvest at a steady rate has become much less than it need be. This is one definition of overfishing, and it turns out that many of the global fisheries have now been overfished. The solution is simple for the most part, curtail fishing for a while until the fisheries recover and then resume fishing. I know "User Boxes" on editors' Talk pages are not high priority — that they're 'just for fun' (and some would say, more or less an indulgence). I like them because they're a way for an editor to tell interesting things about him/herself with quick verbal/visual messages. To me, they're valuable in that way.

I'd like to suggest a few new user boxes, but don't know who to suggest them to. I'm not terribly visually creative, so I'd like to pass my ideas on to someone who is, and who enjoys making user boxes.

I'm happy to be informed & corrected on this.

My experience (11 or 12 years) has been with stub & article writing, content editing, and editing for wording & punctuation. A userbox is new for me, which is why I made it in the Sandbox.

I realize a userbox isn't an article. However, my impression (perhaps incorrect) was that potential userboxes had to be review & approved. If this is correct, then do not know why my submission was rejected — is it because I clicked the wrong button while in the Sandbox?

Greenman, please consider the citation sources again. Yes, two references are from the same source, but there is also another source given.There are numerous citations on Wikipedia referencing Chang's published work. If you put "Garma C. C. Chang" into the Wikipedia search window, these citations come up. The draft (being intended as a stub) cites sources that I'd think would be reliable for a basic biography of the man; it's reasonable to believe there are people who could flesh the skeleton article out.Joel Russ (talk) 15:12, 27 July 2023 (UTC)[reply]
