Inconsistent metrics?[edit]

Some of the tables have feet or miles, others are only metric? I'm not extremely averse to including feet, but it should be done consistently (or not at all). On second thought, it would just make for a lot of clutter here, so I think it should be separate table, a user option, or possibly based on the browser settings (for US or British English). Shanen (talk) 12:17, 26 April 2015 (UTC)[reply]

  • All the tables/lists should provide both metres and feet. Probably would be better if it was based on user preferences rather than on browser settings but no such user preference for metres/feet currently exists. The page is in somewhat of a mess. RedWolf (talk) 02:21, 19 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Clean up required[edit]

This article really needs some attention. The early sections are OK, but everything under "By continent or area" is inconsistent, ill-defined, incomplete, under-referenced and hard to get useful comparative information from. It seems more like a place-holder for links, rather than a useful resource.

I would suggest moving all the area lists out to separate pages. Given that this page already lists the continental high points (the seven summits), and List of countries by highest point gives the equivalent for individual countries, I think that we could get rid of most lists entirely, just leaving an appropriate link to the relevant pages about continents, countries or regions.

Opinions or feedback? --David Edgar (talk) 16:50, 2 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Hmm. Well this list seems to currently be a List of lists of mountains that also contains part of those lists.
We clearly can't put all mountains in one list even if some people might find it useful. I can't currently think of any criteria that could sensibly pick out which subset of all mountains should be included in this list of mountains.
How about renaming this article as List of lists of mountains with a redirect from the current title and try to direct readers to other lists (or create those lists from the content in this article if required)?
Maps of areas with dots+links for each mountain, and bar charts of comparative height for the lists of highest mountains in x, would also be a nice additions. JMiall 11:22, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I agree that this list is completely useless (I even found a ski resort in it), we should rename it List of mountains considered important by Wikipedia users (who are mostly based in North America and Europe). More seriously, I think we should just redirect it to Lists of mountains, like they do for List of rivers, List of cities, List of people etc... The only interesting thing in the list is Summits farthest from Earth's center, everything else is more or less redundant with other lists of mountains. ZachG (Talk) 12:42, 13 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • The page definitely needs some attention. I have noticed the somewhat messy state this page has become but other tasks just took higher precedence but no more. I think this was probably one of the very first wiki pages that provided a list of mountains but now that we have a lot of country specific list pages, this page doesn't need to duplicate that anymore. Country specific lists should link to the separate list of mountains for that country (or create one if needed). There is no need to duplicate on this page what's already on existing country specific lists. However, making these changes starts to duplicate Lists of mountains so while I vote against redirecting to Lists of mountains (for now anyways) a link to it should figure prominently from this page. As David suggested, most (if not all) countries should be removed from this page once someone confirms all the peaks currently on this page are on the country/region/range specific list page. Lists for mountain ranges should also have their own list page. The Lists of mountains page should only contain links to other list pages and never contain any individual peaks. Thanks for the input, everyone.
RedWolf - why do you suggest not making this a redirect to lists of mountains? Having read the earlier comments, I had been thinking of doing that. Almost all the content on this page is already available from either lists of mountains or list of mountain lists (apart from the seven third summits and the furthest from the centre of the earth sections).
In any case, I think it's clear we can at least start checking and removing all the listings for geographical areas on this page, in favour of a prominent link to lists of mountains. --David Edgar (talk) 00:47, 21 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
  • I want to make sure we don't lose any information before making this page a redirect (if that is the final consensus). So first do the cleanup and then see where that takes us. RedWolf (talk) 17:17, 30 May 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Ah, no problem, I agree that's the sensible approach. --David Edgar (talk) 23:48, 2 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Today I started verifying that the mountains by country are already listed in individual country lists. Quite a few countries have needed new pages creating (splitting off), so I've done some of that too. There's plenty of work to do, so it won't all happen overnight... --David Edgar (talk) 23:48, 2 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Clean up: islands[edit]

Some of the remaining sections contain lists of high points of islands in particular regions or oceans. All the entries on these lists exist on list of islands by highest point, and are better managed there, so I propose that there's no necessity in keeping the existing region-based lists on this page. This applies to the sections: Antilles, Atlantic Ocean, Arctic Ocean and Indian Ocean. --David Edgar (talk) 23:14, 4 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Sure. I just added a wordlwide section in Lists of mountains with List of countries by highest point and List of islands by highest point among other lists. ZachG (Talk) 10:09, 6 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

What is the purpose of this list?[edit]

Thanks to David and Zach for all of the hard work they're putting into organizing mountains into lists. At this point, the page is starting to look like List of miscellaneous mountains that don't belong to a sensible list. I can't imagine a reader getting much (if any) value out of this article.

I have an alternate proposal. WP has List of highest mountains, and various sub-articles like List of highest mountains of Germany and List of Highest Mountains in Washington. How about if we move this list to List of highest mountains by country, and list the top 5 mountains per country, given a global prominence threshold? That would nicely complement List of elevation extremes by country. The only problem is: I'm not sure whether we can create such a list without original research. What do other editors think? —hike395 (talk) 21:25, 6 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]

Not sure what is the best solution, but really this article is and always has been a random list of whatever mountains happen to be the favorite of one or more of our editors. I don't think that makes good encyclopedic material. Viewfinder (talk) 20:24, 7 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Indeed. Technically this list fails WP:SALAT. Surely we can all come up with interesting inclusion criteria for worldwide lists (like the one suggested by hike395) but at the end we have to call a spade a spade. "List of mountains", I think, is too vague to redirect anywhere else than to a disambiguation-like page with the different possible lists linked on it. ZachG (Talk) 13:33, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
I was bold and made an attempt to replace the whole list. I would be unoffended if that edit was reverted. Feel free to improve on the list. —hike395 (talk) 15:27, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
That looks like a pretty good solution, actually. Probably it should be identified and categorised as a disambiguation page?
My other slight concern is how it relates to lists of mountains. That page also does some of the same job in its first worldwide section, although without the useful descriptions. I wonder whether we should maybe move that page to lists of mountains by country (and drop the worldwide section), which would then reflect the central purpose of that list as it is now identified on this page. --David Edgar (talk) 22:57, 8 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Is it a disambiguation page, or a list of lists page? Anyway, your point about lists of mountains is a good one. I moved that to Lists of mountains by region (because some of the lists are for provinces), and made a short list of lists, combining what was here with the "worldwide" section of the previous version. List of mountains has now become a redirect to Lists of mountains.
Again, this is all reversible if there are objections. —hike395 (talk) 00:30, 9 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
Looks good to me. And thank you for your correction on Summits farthest from the Earth's center btw. ZachG (Talk) 11:50, 13 June 2015 (UTC)[reply]
