Metaplot concept[edit]

This article does not seem to need much more explanation; metaplot is a pretty simple concept. Metaplot is not limited to White Wolf games, all systems that have over-arching stories are considered to have metaplot. The Dungeons and Dragons game setting Forgotten Realms (by Ed Greenwood, et al) is an example of a system with metaplot, as is the setting-advances used in BattleTech's transiton from Third Edition (by FASA) to Classic BattleTech Fourth Edition (by Fantasy Productions/WizKids). GURPS does not have metaplot, because there is not an over-arching storyline to it, and therefore metaplot advances are not needed. 00:00, 4 Feb 2005 (UTC) — Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.24.118.207 (talk)

lack of criticism[edit]

I feel this article would be improved if there was a section on the negative aspects of metaplots too, as to answer the question "why doesn't all rpgs have 'em?".

I'll start: Metaplots may make earlier released material obsolete and/or incompatible (storywise). If players get later modules, that might spoil things. This limits the market. ...

That may be a valuable section to add, but Wikipedia articles must not contain original research. If such a section on reception/criticism can be supported by citations to reliable sources, it might be good to add. (I don't think it'd be suitable to include a section just for negative opinions about metaplots, because the rest of the article is not pro-metaplots either. quality[edit]

Okay, so this article is not up to standards right now. It lacks references. It effectively claims "metaplot is only for rpgs" which is even dodgier than if the article just happened to bring up rpg examples only (compare a U.S.-centric article; those usually don't say outright "this happens only in the U.S." 213.66.219.48 (talk) 08:36, 6 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, "metaplot" is definitely used in literary contexts as well as RPGs, and probably in film/TV as well. I don't know where to look for references, though. --Jim Henry (talk) 20:58, 22 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Exported to RPG Museum[edit]

On 6 March 2020, the Metaplot page and its complete edit history has been exported from here and imported at RPG Museum (page link), a growing wiki on Fandom that intends to be a resource for all tabletop RPGs.
