On creating the article[edit]

I was reluctant to add this word to wikipedia, which is pretty foreign for English. But google gives cca. 30,000 English hits, so may be you want to know the word after all. Mikkalai 01:07, 3 Mar 2004 (UTC)

On Serbian and Russian[edit]

I don't speak any Slavic language. The article currently states: "Serbian and Russian: о́круг". Is the accent correct for the Serbian word ? The wiktionary "округ" & sr:Окрузи Србије articles don't use it. In the "Districts of Serbia" article, I changed Округ into округ and Окрузи into окрузи: should I have used о́круг and о́крузи instead ?
A clarification for Russian usage would be welcomed too (no accent in wiktionary "округ" or ru:Федеральные округа Российской Федерации). - Best regards, Evv 18:14, 19 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

In Russian, accents are not used in normal writing, but are present in dictionaries and encyclopedias to indicate stress (in encyclopedias, only the title word is stressed). In Wikipedia, we normally show stress in Russian words when such word follows the English or transliterated version. Relevance[edit]

I would doubt the relevance – in an article about the word okrug as borrowed into English to refer to a type of territorial division found (now or previously) in various Slavic-language speaking countries – of the following sentence (especially when it appears under a main heading):

Okrug is used in Russian to refer to the Districts of Israel, known as mehozot in Hebrew and manatiq in Arabic.

The word is also used in Russian to refer to the subprefectures of Japan, (known as shichō in Japanese), to US counties, to the Bezirke of the former GDR, and no doubt also to various other sub-national entities in countries outside Russia. But, as I say, this is an article about what the English loanword okrug refers to, not to any other uses to which the original Russian word may be put by Russian speakers. You are absolutely correct. The article covers the meanings of the English loanword, not the usages of the term in the source language(s). I've taken the Israel section out. The Meadow Mari Vareity[edit]

I noticed that it listed Meadow Mari version of okrug as йырвел, jyrvel. However, Meadow Mari is not a Slavic language, and I can not find similarities in the pronunciations of okrug and jyvel. Do these two words come from the same origin? If not, I don't think jyvel should be put in here. Takekawa (talk) 09:08, 3 September 2018 (UTC)[reply]
