I am concerned regarding the treatment of the emergence of Gunung Barujari (G. Baru). Some information is presented on the internet describing Gunung Barujari as first appearing as an outcome of the 1994-1995 eruptions in the caldera. This information appears in several locations and publications I have viewed on the internet.

Vulcanology sources however describe Gunung Barujari as the source of historic eruptions and activity dating back to 1847. ie: from <http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/volcano.cfm?vnum=0604-03=&volpage=erupt> Global Vulcanism Program - Rinjani  » Eruptive History: Start Date: 1847 Sep 10 Stop Date: 1847 Sep 12 - Dating Technique: Historical Records - Volcanic Explosivity Index (VEI): 2 - Area of Activity: Gunung Barujari.

Gunung Barujari is well documented in a wide range of authoritative publications as being the location of as an eruptive site prior to 1994. ie: --- In May 1994 a glow was noticed on the crater floor of Barujari cone, which at this time had undergone no significant activity since August 1966. A portable seismograph (PS-2) and telemetry seismograph (Teledyne) were put into operation on 27 May and 9 June, respectively. One volcanic earthquake event/day was recorded on 27, 28, 30, and 31 May. After 4 June, however, volcanic tremor with a maximum amplitude of 35 mm was recorded, presumably associated with the upward movement of magma. At 0200 on 3 June1994, Barujari cone began erupting by sending an ash plume 500 m high. One 8 June 1994 press report described emission of "smoldering lava" and "thick smoke," as well as ashfall in nearby villages from an ash cloud rising 1,500 m above the summit. Between 3 and 10 June 1994, up to 172 explosions could be heard each day from the Sembalun Lawang volcano observatory (~15 km NE). During this period, seismic data indicated a dramatic increase in the number of explosions per day, from 68 to 18,720. Eruptions were continuous at least through 19 June 1994, with maximum ash plume heights of 2,000 m on 9-11 June 1994.[20] --- Black-and-white reproduction of a Space Shuttle infrared photograph of Lombok Island and Rinjani sometime during 7-16 May 1992 (Figure 1). The elevation-controlled shading is thought to reflect vegetation zones. NASA photograph number STS-49-97-051 is available at: <http://www.volcano.si.edu/volcanoes/region06/sunda/rinjani/06rin01f.jpg> and appears on the Global Vulcanism - Monthly Reports page for Rinjani. It is a NASA photo taken from a space shuttle overflight in 1992 and clearly shows Gunung Barujari siting in the caldera at that time. I hope that photograph will clarify the matter for any sceptics.Felix505 (talk) 04:16, 10 May 2010 (UTC)felix505[reply]

I cannot find a government or academic reference to an "eruption" in 1996 so I have edited the intro section to remove 1996. The section now describes: 1994-1995 instead of 1994-1996.
It now reads ...' 'The first historical eruption occurred in September 1847. The most recent eruption of Mount Rinjani was in May 2010 and the most recent significant eruptions occurred during a spate of activity from 1994 to 1995 which resulted in the further development of Gunung Barujari.' '
Please see <http://www.volcano.si.edu/world/volcano.cfm?vnum=0604-03=&volpage=erupt> for a formal documentation of the history and abbreviated detail of rinjani eruptions. If anyone turns up formal documentation of an eruption event in 1996 then please post it also on the wikitravel discussion page at <http://wikitravel.org/en/Talk:Mount_Rinjani> to ensue the detail is not missed on that page.
If I am in error here and there was a formally documented eruption of rinjani in 1996 or even a news media article then please correct the history section of the page to reflect that but if anyone does so please do ensure that the source is a credible one and perhaps post a link or academic citation to the information on this discussion page to ensure clarity. Please do not refer to internet sites that are simply parroting or cutting and pasting ' ' 1994 - 1996' ' from pre-may 2010 versions of either the wikitravel rinjani page or the wikipedia rinjani page. It appears that many of the tourism information and commercial rinjani trekking pages are doing this, or just copying and pasting each others text back and forth.Felix505 (talk) 14:32, 16 May 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Nice[edit]

Good job on it. ResMar 03:24, 14 June 2010 (UTC)[reply]

13th Century[edit]

There is a rumour that this may be the unnamed eruption described by Franck Lavigne as "the biggest volcanic eruption in 7,000 years" and dated to 1257 or 1258. --Rumping (talk) 18:35, 16 June 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Samalas[edit]

Should Samalas redirect here? See for example 1258 using this designation for the volcano. Does anybdoy know why there are two names? --Tobias1984 (talk) 10:10, 2 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

I think for now we can redirect Samalas volcano to Mount Rinjani. I suggest we create a special section about Samalas in this article. From many source I can said that Samalas volcano is different from Rinjani (and they are very close). For now Samalas volcano is no longer exist, remain only caldera there. *Annas* (talk) 06:26, 25 October 2013 (UTC)[reply]

Volcanology chapter outdated[edit]

The volcanology chapter is outdated. I know that there have been eruptions in both 2016 and 2018 which are not listed 84.147.122.220 (talk) 13:09, 11 May 2023 (UTC)[reply]
