Deceptive line about republican stronghold on seat[edit]

A line appears in this article: "Bean defeated Crane with 52% of the vote to become the first Democrat to represent the 8th District since its creation in 1935." Sure, that's technically true. But Phil Crane was actually first elected to the 13th District before population shrinking, a seat only held by Donald Rumsfeld before that. (It was created in 1962 I believe) Let me know if I have my facts mixed up here. Velvetsmog 09:13, 16 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Your facts are mixed up. There has been no population shrinking. The district was rearranged a few years ago, but has been steadily growing for forty years.

Liberal?[edit]

I deleted the line that described Bean as a liberal. Bean has, to my knowledge, never described herself that way (often during her campaigns she seems hesitant to even call herself a Democrat), and I don't know how many liberals would vote for CAFTA, the bankruptcy bill, and so on. --JamesB3 04:14, 30 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Melissa Bean voted for legislation protecting gun manufacturers from lawsuits as well as CAFTA, Mark Kirk is more of a liberal on many issues.

CAFTA Vote[edit]

Melissa Bean has aroused great anger among labor unions that helped her campaign against Phil Crane in 2004. It will be a significant factor in Bean's 2006 campaign for re-election. CAFTA Controversey added 21:02, 10 April 2006 (UTC)

She is president of a major consulting firm?[edit]

The statement "She is president of a major consulting firm." is in the opening paragraph. I thought being a member of Congress was a full time job that severely limits your outside income. Is this true or should it be "Prior to her election to Congress, She was president of a major consulting firm". Also, if it is a "major" consulting firm, shouldn't it me named and referenced? --rogerd 17:39, 12 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Robo calling by Democrats too[edit]

"...Jonathan Collegio, a spokesman for the National Republican Campaign Committee, criticized Bean for "robocalls" to 8th District voters, which is allowed for members of Congress and funded by the federal government. The calls notified 8th District residents of upcoming town hall meetings and workshops. "Melissa Bean shamelessly bilked Illinois taxpayers for thousands of dollars of automated phone calls," Collegio said, "and now she has the gall to criticize the GOP for privately funded phone banking during the campaign season." [1]

If this properly cited fact is removed from the Melissa Bean biography and labeled "POV" by Mr. PROPOL (Who is MR. POV democrat himself if his editing histories on biographies of Republican officeholders and Illinois is examined), Then it's only fair the Robo calling citation for Peter Roskam should be considered POV as well, and should be removed per the precedent set by MR.(POV) Propol, for this Democratic officeholder, Melissa Bean.

(Side Note: MR. Propol should focus on the debate and not throwout disruptive and uncivil remarks like "he's POV" which further reinforces the reputation Wikipedia has as a toxic editing environment.)

It could be said, at least Peter Roskam did not use taxpayer monies for automated phone calls as it was done with the Melissa Bean campaign. So will we keep both? or remove both. You can not have it both ways. Fair is Fair.

The righteous indignation is a bit hollow considering both parties, Democrats and Republicans use Robo calling because it is effective. To only point out Republican use of Robo calling and then ignoring the Democrats use of robo calling is absolutely biased and unfair.

The sword can cut both ways so I would suggest that we make every effort for neutral point of view on political biographies as to assure fair treatment of all. 128.241.108.165 08:31, 8 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I removed this line: "Bean has been criticized for refusing to move into the 8th District." as there was no citation and was awkwardly tacked on to the end of a section. Structure[edit]

As an article about a politician, the focus should be on her career much more than her political campaigns. For those only interested in the latter, I suggest you work on the campaign articles themselves.

As I've worked on updating the External links template in the Senator and US Rep articles, I've seen some convergence and consensus on the naming and sequence of sections. I have updated this article to reflect those. While doing that, I've noticed that some articles, certainly including this one, have been 'hit' by some people obviously angry about a few specific issues and votes. We are an encyclopedia, not a blog. Undue weight and obvious POV is extremely detrimental to Wikipedia's reputation. If someone is interested in writing a balanced section on Bean's issue positions and voting record, there are excellent sources included in the External links section (from the template). Otherwise, it would be better to eliminate that entire section of the article and just stick with her committee memberships and let users follow the External links on their own.
