Verbs due to recent passing[edit]

Verbs following Toriyama's name have been changed to past tense due to recent passing, but the last sentence in the first paragraph reads weird.

It's currently "Toriyama was regarded as one of the authors who changed the history of manga, as his works are highly influential and popular, particularly Dragon Ball, which many manga artists cite as a source of inspiration.", implying he's no longer regarded as such due to his passing. I suggest to change it back to "Toriyama is regarded as...", as that would imply he still regarded as such regardless of passing. Vleesevlons (talk) 04:11, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

@Vleesevlons: Hmm. I am not sure that changing it to "is" will work. Would "had been" work, like in this edit, or does it still read incorrectly? --Super Goku V (talk) 04:34, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The sentence reads somewhat jarringly but it's not because of the tense (which should be present, as his death does nothing to change how he is regarded as an author). Wlerin (talk) 09:11, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha, though someone did change my edit to "is" already, so it seems that everything worked out with a brief detour. Still, thank you for correcting me. I struggle a bit with tone. --Super Goku V (talk) 09:15, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Also please change “Torishima claimed that Toriyama draws what he finds interesting and is not mindful of what his readers think.[80] Torishima stated that Toriyama does not get much inspiration from other comics as Toriyama chooses not to re-read previous works nor read works done by other manga artists; Torishima supports that practice.” To “Torishima claimed that Toriyama drew what he found interesting and was not mindful of what his readers thought.[80] Torishima stated that Toriyama did not get much inspiration from other comics as Toriyama chose not to re-read previous works nor read works done by other manga artists; Torishima supports that practice. Please change “Besides manga-related works, Toriyama also done various illustrations, album and book covers, mascots and logos” to “Besides manga-related works, Toriyama had also done various illustrations, album and book covers, mascots and logos” TheBestSupremeEditor (talk) 20:18, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done Past perfect tenses in this case isn't warranted given that there is no events stated sequentially here. – robertsky (talk) 05:50, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
My suggestion is to fix a typo, “Besides manga-related works, Toriyama also donevarious illustrations, album and book covers, mascots and logos” there should be a had or has in there TheBestSupremeEditor (talk) 19:49, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
This is not a typo. Your request is introducing an incorrect grammar.
I don't know how else to tell you this, but We use the past perfect simple (had + past participle) to talk about time up to a certain point in the past. [1].
What you are probably looking for is "had also been doing" (past continuous tense), which is about continuous activity/activities in the past before and after something else (among other things). [2] Is this what you are trying to get at? – robertsky (talk) 00:04, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
I’m not saying there is a problem with the tensing, but the grammar is wrong. “Toriyama also done various illustrations…” is grammatically incorrect. “Toriyama has/had also done” would be correct TheBestSupremeEditor (talk) 01:32, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Even “also did” would work TheBestSupremeEditor (talk) 02:05, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Add “Author” and/or “Manga Author” to occupations

Also add “Dragon Ball Super” to notable work as it is a separate series from Dragon Ball TheBestSupremeEditor (talk) 20:29, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Not done Dragon Ball Super takes place in the same timeline as the original DB and thus is a part of the series. Davest3r08 >:) (talk) 16:59, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]

Then what about adding author to occupations? TheBestSupremeEditor (talk) 19:54, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
TheBestSupremeEditor, a manga artist also writes manga so the "author" or "manga author" label is not needed — Davest3r08 >:) (talk) 22:18, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Not all manga artists write their own manga. The reason I am requesting this addition is because Toriyama stopped actually drawing Dragon Ball but still continued writing it TheBestSupremeEditor (talk) 22:46, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
TheBestSupremeEditor, he still, at one point, used to both draw and write DB. This isn't worth arguing over. This article is about his life and career and the occupation section is used to summarize the person's lifelong occupations, it doesn't matter if he stopped writing and/or drawing the manga at all. — Davest3r08 >:) (talk) 23:41, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
What about the fact that he helped write GT (a bit) and also helped write DAIMA? TheBestSupremeEditor (talk) 23:52, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
TheBestSupremeEditor, my point still stands. — Davest3r08 >:) (talk) 00:22, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
The detailed descriptions of his involvement in each work are explained in their appropriate spots, we can't add every job title to the lead or infobox so we have to decide on which are most representative of his work as a whole. What you described in that last comment tho would be what's called a "screenwriter", not an "author". A discussion for that could be had if other people wanted to chime in, since he wrote the scripts to 4 films and some story ideas for a few TV anime. But I personally don't feel strongly about calling him that because the TV anime work was just expanding or adding a bit on adaptations of his own manga (he actually did not write any of GT like you say, and we don't know exactly how much of Daima at this moment). Apologies, I had not seen that. I would still argue that neither image serve the "same encyclopedic purpose" because of the difference in quality. I will wait for others to add their comments in. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 23:43, 8 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Based on my past understanding when an object that was the subject of an article was destroyed, we needed to wait to see if a free alternative or a compatible licensed image was available instead of using a non-free source to comply with NFCCP.
In the current situation, we have a non-free image and an image which is licensed under Creative Commons. My understanding is that the non-free image would fail WP:NFCCP#1 because there is the existence of a free alternative. Regarding the quality concern, we could try the cropped version of the file to see if it is preferable to the uncropped version. Otherwise, we would need to find another image that is either free or with a compatible license. --Super Goku V (talk) 12:02, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Shouldn't we at least use the uncropped version? It kinda irks me to have such a pixelated, cropped version as the main picture. JBOOK17 (talk) 13:25, 9 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
As far as I am aware, using the cropped or uncropped version would be a preference situation. I don't really have an opinion on which one is better, so if you feel that the uncropped version is better, then you could have a separate or sub-discussion to confirm which one should be used. --Super Goku V (talk) 05:40, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
good/bad news, the images are found to be potentially copyright violations. if deleted, we can use NFCC compliant image. If not deleted, I suggest using the uncropped version. – robertsky (talk) 06:39, 10 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Huh, I didn't know we had an NFCC compliant image that we could use right now. Or are you referring to the 1982 image? --Super Goku V (talk) 10:04, 11 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
@ElijahPepe: Are you pretty sure that a free image does not exist? --Super Goku V (talk) 05:41, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Yes. elijahpepe@wikipedia (he/him) 14:22, 12 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
Gotcha. Then using that image should be fine for the purpose of NFCCP. Thank you for the response and for uploading the image. --Super Goku V (talk) 08:08, 13 March 2024 (UTC)[reply]
