Untitled[edit]

I'm not editing the article regarding the numbering of the Fort Smith section of I-540 because it seems the writer may have been there more recently. However, IIRC when I traveled that road shortly after the newer part of I-540 was completed a few years back, the exit signs and mileposts WERE renumbered to be consistent with the new road (i.e., from Oklahoma line north), though local billboards still had the old exit numbers. Perhaps an AHTD re-signing project erroneously restored the original exit numbers and mileposts?

To my knowledge, the only exit that was renumbered was Exit 1 (renumbered Exit 15). US 71 02:39, 28 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Exit list - Southern Spur[edit]

Several of the Interstate articles have exit lists. This one does not, yet, but here's the rundown for the older, southern spur, from north to south (note: exit 4 and exit 7 do not exist):

  • Exit 1A/1B Interstate Highway 40 Oklahoma City/ Little Rock (now posted as Exit 15)
  • Exit 2A/2B (Van Buren): US 64/Bus US 71 (Posted as US 64)
  • Exit 3 (Van Buren): Arkansas State Hwy 59
  • Exit 5 (Fort Smith): Kelley Highway
  • Exit 6 (Fort Smith): Grand Avenue
  • Exit 8A/8B (Fort Smith): Rogers Ave./Arkansas State Hwy 22
  • Exit 9 was originally signed for Leigh Ave./Airport (Fort Smith Municipal). Today it is signed for Phoenix Ave. East (after that road was extended to the northwest, parallel with 540 briefly and eventually meeting Rogers when shifting to east-west again) and the Airport (Fort Smith Regional).
  • Exit 10 Arkansas State Highway 45 /Greenwood Rd/ Phoenix West
  • Exit 11 (Fort Smith): Arkansas State Highway 255 / Zero Street
  • Exit 12 (Fort Smith): South US 71/Business 71
  • Exit 13 (Fort Smith): Jenny Lind Road
  • Exit 14 (Fort Smith): North US 271/ South AR Hwy 253

After Exit 14 the highway becomes US 271 South and goes southeast into Oklahoma. --JohnDBuell 01:43, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Actually 271 goes southwest into Oklahoma. 70.178.85.238 (talk) 03:16, 27 February 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Change in exit names[edit]

This article says that the names of the exits will be changing because the area was recently redesignated as urban. Brandonrush Woo pig sooie 21:36, 2 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Here is an updated list of changes as of 1 October 2011:

Exit 83: Pinnacle Hills Parkway (AR 94 has been deleted at this exit)

Exit 85: US 71B, West AR 12: SE Walton Blvd, W Walnut St (Bentonville/Rogers)

Exit 86 West AR 102, East US 62, East AR 12: SE 14th St, Hudson Road (Bentonville/Rogers) US 71 (talk) 13:58, 7 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Future I-540[edit]

This section needs to be removed: there is no current or planned concurrency with I-49 and I-540. Any temporary designations of I-49 will be AR Route 549. US 71 (talk)

Moreover, I think the statement that after I-49 is completed that the I-540 designation will be retired is not accurate. Am I meant to understand that the original route, the southern spur through Van Buren and Fort Smith, is to be decommissioned even though it will not be part of I-49? --72.18.38.100 (talk) 14:07, 4 August 2016 (UTC)[reply]

I have no Crystal ball but I am fairly certain that I-540 will not be decomissioned once I-49 is built and opens. They are proposed to be 2 separate highways south of 40 so I seriously doubt I-540 will be going bye bye. Also the fact the article does not have any mentions of I-540 being decomissioned south of 40. These 2 things prompted me to remove that line. Tunnels[edit]

These is no mention of any tunnels in I-540, though they are shown in some highway maps.47.215.180.7 (talk) 21:10, 4 February 2018 (UTC)[reply]

That would be the Bobby Hopper Tunnel, now part of Interstate 49. US 71 (talk) 14:16, 9 April 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Arkansas Highway 540 Ft Smith[edit]

Part of I-540 around Fort Smith was once Arkansas Highway 540. From 1969 to 1977, it ran from Arkansas Highway 22 to US Highway 71 from 1969 to 1977, then was extended to US 271 in 1978, becoming I-540 in 1980.
