Perry and Bob Marley, Peter Tosh and Bunny Wailer[edit]

There are some errors in the article. The Wailers did never record in The Black Ark studio. They left Perry in April 1971, before The Ark was built. Perry produced the Wailers in recording studios owned by others. That's why artists some years later, like Max Romeo, Gladiators and Junior Murvin, sounds much better with Perry as producer.--Caspiax (talk) 06:42, 2 January 2011 (UTC)[reply]


homophobia?[edit]

I have heard from people who've seen Scratch perform that goes into spiels about the immorality of homosexuality. I think he's pretty insane as well. Anyone?

Homosexuality, insanity, etc.[edit]

Is he mad tho? I met Lee Perry in Brixton, London, England in 2005. He was walking around with his children and I bought him a drink. Yup, he's insane, totally off his rocker in every way. Last interview I saw with him he claimed to be anti-black (but not like Michael Jackson, he said, whatever that means) and hated the blackness of Jamaica because black is associated with the devil. I have no idea what it means, either, just relating.

He said one shouldn't kill animals or eat meat but that he kills who has to be killed, again he refuses to clarify, stating only that since he wore the "ring of Solomon" he was now "lord of the rings" and had the power over life and death. He's frequently ranted against gays, but frankly I'd say that's par for the course for the following reasons:

1. He rants against EVERYTHING, he feuds with everyone and he makes very little sense so people kind of let it slide 2. Everyone in Jamaica would more or less agree that homosexuals need to be lynched. Sad but true, homophobia is beyond common there, it's carried out with almost religious fervor.

Perhaps he is also playing to his audience, of journalists or whatever. It is one thing to be an insane unknown but when you are a legend with a nutty reputation....perhaps he was just playing it up. I wonder if his music is still any good. It certainly used to be brilliant, I listen to his Congos production a lot. Incredible. Beethoven seemed to go insane as he got older yet his music tells another story which is why I wonder about the music. Mystic Warrior/Mystic Warrior Dub Release Date[edit]

I remember listening to this album (on vinal) in 1988 but its listed as 1997 does anyone know the actual release date? Htaccess 15:40, 12 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

1997 is certainly wrong. According to Ariwa Records' website [1], it was released in 1986. Perry Fanatix lists the release as having been "recorded & mixed at ARIWA Studios, London, 1989". [2] In the sleeve notes to "Method To The Madness – The Best Of Mad Professor", Neil Fraser is quoted as saying "[Perry] came down with Winston Edwards and Joe Gibbs in September 1984 and Scratch said he wanted to do some work, so I said "No problem." He voiced "Judgement Inna Babylon" in my studio and when he finished with his tracks, he then ended up voicing a load of tracks for me as well and a lot of them came out on Mystic Warrior, which wasn’t released until 1988, but there was at least another two albums' worth left that never came out." The Upsetters[edit]

Why does the link to the Upsetters point directly to Lee "Scratch" Perry? I am aware that he has been involved in producing that musical formation, but he himself is not the Upsetters.

Black Ark burning[edit]

In regards to the sentence: "Perry has constantly insisted that he burned the Black Ark himself in a fit of rage, but it was most likely an accident due to faulty wiring." Is there any basis for why it was most probably faulty wiring? Perry was a bit of a pyro, it isn't remotely hard to imagine him doing it deliberately. It's not remotely hard to imagine that it could have been an accident that he took credit for, either. Or that he might claim that it was burned down by the devil or aliens. At very least that sentence deserves a fact tag. It now has that. ta. Josh (talk) 15:32, 19 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Rewrite ideas[edit]

The "Later Career" section has more content than his earlier career periods. His most influential works belong to the 60s and 70s. I'm going to reduce and tighten the Later Career section and increase the earlier period material.

I've added a new section on his early life, since I think it's important to get some background. Especially for the people who are asking if he has always been eccentric or did that only happen later in life. Perry's studio residence between '68 and '73[edit]
