This is a list of New Hampshire county name etymologies:

  1. Belknap County: Belknap is named for early New Hampshire historian Jeremy Belknap.
  2. Carroll County: Carroll is named for Founding Father Charles Carroll of Carrollton.
  3. Cheshire County: Cheshire is named for the English county of Cheshire.
  4. Coos County: Coos is from a Native American word meaning crooked, in reference to a bend in the Connecticut River.
  5. Grafton County: Grafton is named for Augustus Henry Fitzroy, 3rd Duke of Grafton.
  6. Hillsborough County: Hillsborough is named for Wills Hill, 1st Marquess of Downshire, known in America as the Earl of Hillsborough.
  7. Merrimack County: Merrimack is named for the Merrimack River.
  8. Rockingham County: Rockingham is named for Charles Watson-Wentworth, 2nd Marquess of Rockingham, a two-time Prime Minister of Great Britain.
  9. Strafford County: Stafford is named for William Wentworth, 2nd Earl of Strafford. He was ancestor of the Wentworths, three of whom were colonial governors of New Hampshire: John Wentworth, his son Benning and Benning's nephew John Wentworth.
  10. Sullivan County: Sullivan is named for Governor of New Hampshire John Sullivan.
