Album Title[edit]

The album title is Songs in A Minor, as in "A minor" the musical scale. --FuriousFreddy 14:58, 14 Jun 2005 (UTC)

What is meant by the title being "a playful reference to Keys' youth?" Were a lot of people inside her when she was a minor? PenguinJockey 06:41, 6 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In a minor's (youth's) mind/heart? --CPGACoast (talk) 20:50, 8 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Contradiction[edit]

In this article: "Interestingly, only one song, "Jane Doe," is in the key of A Minor."

In A minor: "All of the songs in Alicia Keys's album Songs in A minor are actually in A minor."

Since I'm no expert, can someone get rid of the one that's wrong? 80.235.131.120 20:37, 13 July 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Removed crosse reference in the A minor article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by BaconDoubleGeniusBurger (talkcontribs)

Previous titles[edit]

Should something be said about previous titles? I have a sampler, apparently from when the album was to be titled "The Life...". It has Fallin', How Come You Didn't Call Me, Troubles, Rock Wit U, and Girlfriend on it. It is labeled "alicia keys - songs from the forthcoming album, The Life..." -Violask81976 20:05, 19 July 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Edits reverted[edit]

I've reverted the edits made here for a few reasons; I'll go in chronological order, starting with the infobox. For example, some of the links (specifically Atlanta and George) where changed to Atlanta, Georgia, with the reason being "merged wikilinks of city and states together to minimize wikilinks". Because the Atlanta, Georgia redirects to Atlanta, these wikilinks should be kept separate to avoid these redirects. Second, the reviews; there's really no reason to change them. The review by The Village Voice is the exact same review on Christgau's website, which is why it was substituted. Q magazine's review is not included in the infobox because the only way to link to it is through the use if Metacritic and isn't very helpful as it is just a summary of the entire review; this can be mentioned in the article body. For the NME review, there should only be one, not two reviews linked. If the second review adds anything new, it can be mentioned in the article body. The Yahoo! links seems to have been switched to another for no specific reason. Considering there was nothing wrong with the prior review, there's nothing to fix. As for the reception section, generally, the reviews of the album come before the commercial performance, because the reviews are usually out before the sales and eventual success of the album. Please add questions and comments here before reverting. Thank you. — Σxplicit 05:59, 19 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The Washington Post review[edit]

Transcription using Google News Advanced News Archive Search. The Washington Post (Harrington, Richard. T.07. Sep 7, 2001) review of Songs in A Minor (2001):

Alicia Keys, a precocious 20-year-old, has made quite a debut: "Songs in A Minor" opened at No. 1 and spent three weeks there (it was replaced recently by Maxwell's "Now"). A classically trained pianist with vocal maturity and writing instincts beyond her years, Keys is just beginning to find her voice on this, a largely self- produced album where she is still under some key influences. These include an early supporter, hip-hop producer Jermaine Dupri, whose slinky funk styling informs "Girlfriend" and the cool groove, "Rock With U"; En Vogue, whose sensual energy graces "Fallin' "; and Laura Nyro, whose soaring melodies and vocal ornamentations emerge in such piano-driven reveries as "Butterflyz," "Why Do I Feel So Sad" and "Caged Bird." On "Mr. Man," Keys engages the song's writer, Brian McKnight, in a charmingly flirtatious dialogue and she manages to revitalize Prince's "How Come You Don't Call Me Anymore." Finally, Keys's "A Woman's Worth" offers an intriguing update on "Do Right Woman, Do Right Man." The assurance of her performance is a harbinger of stronger writing in the future.
