South Norwood is also: a neighborhood, with a strong sense of local and ethnic identity, in Norwood, Massachusetts, U.S.A. Dpbsmith 00:15, 27 Feb 2004 (UTC)

OK, I've got that off my chest... now I don't have to do anything stupid on the main page or create a stupid disambiguation page.

South Norwood Lake mention[edit]

In the 4th paragraph it mentions the nicest area is known as South Norwood Lakes. It states that the lakes is in South Norwood Country Park and describes the surrounding area. This is wrong, the lake is part of South Norwood Lake and Grounds. South Norwood Country Park is more south, beyond the London Bridge - Brighton line. Link changed to reflect this. Smoothy 16:21, 2 March 2007 (UTC)[reply]

A note about the 'South Norwood Country park' or Sewage farm as it was known until the mid 80s. The site was up for redevelopment in the late 70s but was found to have a dangerously high lead content in the soil, so housing could not be built upon it. At about the same time an archaeological dig uncovered a small roman moated settlement that was inhabited right up to the middle ages - if someone fancies looking up a source i am sure it was in the usual journals - I know about the dig because I assisted, until the lead threat made the use of volunteer labour a bit too risky.
Also might be good to mention Captain sensible of the Damned as an inhabitant, went to Stanley tech later lived at Edith Road whilst in the Damned. he even wrote a song about the place, called 'croydon' the B side to Happy Talk.

London Bus Routes[edit]

I see this has changed a fair bit. Well, I have slightly rewritten it. Yes there is a night bus going to Central London, the N68, which runs through South Norwood Hill and turns into Whitehorse Lane. It does stop around here, in fact it stops outside the Nugent Road bus stop (according to the TfL Journey Planner and my own experience). It's not explicity stated as a stop on the N68 maps but it's a minor stop and the bus maps don't mark every single stop. Anyone who can read maps know that to get from Upper Norwood (Beulah Hill) to Thornton Heath on a bus means travelling through South Norwood Hill to Whitehorse Lane, therefore going through the top edge of South Norwood. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by Smoothy (talkcontribs) 13:48, 12 April 2007 (UTC).[reply]

Public Toilets[edit]

This might not be a huge issue but I reckon that there should be a mention of the public toilets that used to be under the clocktower until the 80's or 90's. Unfortunately I've only heard stories about them, and don't really know anything solid. Anyone know anything? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.44.48.149 (talk) 12:48, 4 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

There were public toilets in Portland Road between the railway bridge and the Jolly Sailor. — Preceding unsigned comment added by 82.33.140.88 (talk) 20:10, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Rewrite[edit]

I have started rewriting the article to match Wikipedia:WikiProject UK geography/How to write about settlements. I will carry on over the next few days. Regan123 23:12, 12 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Excellent. Looks a lot better and more formal, I'm impressed. I just tidied up a few bits cos of slightly bad grammar.Smoothy 12:46, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Thanks I was a bit tired when doing it. I am going to work on the recreation section next. Just need to find some local history sources. Regan123 13:37, 13 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]
I have added a B quality with low importance to the project banner. Areas for improvement include the history section to be expanded with reliable sources and, as always, more refs! Regan123 06:55, 21 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Images[edit]

I see that there is two new images, cool. However, I think they're a bit out of place where they are now. For a start, they begin underneath the "Sports" headline, despite the fact that they are not related at all to this section. Secondly, I think you only need one to go alongside the section they relate to (in this case, "Recreation"), mainly because this section is so small. If both pictures need to go into the article, they should start from "Recreation", not from "Sports".Smoothy 10:04, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Yes, it has been starting to drift into incoherence, so I've gone ahead and moved one of the images to the right hand side. I have moved the other one (with the Tramlink line) to Tramlink route 2 (if that is the right article - my memory of the local geography is a bit hazy now - pls fix if I've got it wrong). Also, I have combined the two sections into one because, as you point out, the recreation section was very small.--A bit iffy 11:15, 24 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Picture[edit]

Soon more pictures of South Norwood town will come to this page as well as others, because i'm going to go "crazy" with my digital camera next week! So if you see anyone around Croydon with a camera it's probably me! Pafcool2 15:35, 8 August 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The flyover that carried the atmospheric line is not near Portland Road but south of the Tennison Road bridge. It is still in use carrying trains bound for West Croydon over the main Brighton lines, just as it was when it opened in 1846. River Wandle[edit]

I've just removed the following sentence from the lead: "A tributary of the River Wandle, which rises in Merton, ends in South Norwood." It's pretty much impossible that a tributary ends in South Norwood (what, does it flow uphill? does it flow into South Norwood Lake?). It's conceivable there's a minor tributary which begins in South Norwood, but I haven't seen it mentioned anywhere. If anyone has hard information, please reinsert it. GrindtXX (talk) 17:47, 29 August 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Stanley Halls[edit]

I think it would be good if there was a paragraph/section in the main article about Stanley Halls, which played a key part in the lives of South Norwood citizens for a long time, and hopefully will again. Guineveretoo (talk) 18:33, 28 January 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Conan Doyle house[edit]

Pictures of both interior and exterior of the Conan Doyle house were featured in (July-December 1892) of The Strand Magazine, for an interview and writeup titled, "A Day with Conan Doyle," by Harry How. (talk) 13:51, 3 May 2020 (UTC)[reply]

South Norwood ward[edit]

"Together with Norwood New Town, it forms the electoral ward of South Norwood in the local authority of Croydon. The ward as a whole had a resident population in 2001 of just over 14,000.[2]"

This is no longer true, Norwood New Town is in Crystal Palace and Upper Norwood Ward. However 2001 is the newest census data released at a ward level until the 2021 data is released. So the population figure does represent a wider area. It may be better to just remove this whole sentence given how old the data now is, pending some general updates to the demography data in this article? — Preceding unsigned comment added by 77.99.52.83 (talk) 15:39, 14 October 2022 (UTC)[reply]

South Norwood High Street & police station[edit]

There are, AFAIAA, no banks left in SN High Street. The Barclays became a Costa. The Nat West which moved along the High Street to the ex police station, closed a few years ago.

The police station had moved to a purpose built station in Oliver Grove - it was built on a car park and has subsequently become a sixth form college. 82.33.140.88 (talk) 20:26, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

I deleted the sentence per WP:NOTGUIDE. Also anything in th elead should be a summary of the main, and that wasn't. Sirfurboy🏄 (talk) 20:41, 7 March 2023 (UTC)[reply]

Stanley Arts - single source[edit]

The whole Stanley Arts section could do with a rewrite using more than the one source, in fact text is far too similar to text on their website: https://stanleyarts.org/about-us/our-vision/ Could use local newspapers/archival sources to improve a diversity of sources?
