"nuke" used for nuclear when referring to non-weapons use?

I have noticed that many websites (msnbc.com for one) and other media are starting to use the word nuke as shorthand for nuclear when referring to Iran's nuclear program in article headlines. I have also noticed the word nuke being fully replaced by nuclear in the article.

Is this an attempt by various media to purposely infer that Iran is interested in only weapons related nuclear research, and could not be interested in power generation?

A colloquialism for a nuclear weapon, or the use of one

A former (now disused) colloquialism for a nuclear power plant

Is there any proof of this "now disused" claim? I am not aware of it.

There might be more data regarding "exploit"{??} [ exploit_(computer_security) ].

If the term is still used that way, feel free to removed the "now disused" part of the description. I personally haven't heard a nuclear power plant referred to as a "nuke" in a long time, though it was common back about 1975-1980, but if your information or experience is different, go ahead and change the article. --Mwalimu59 21:30, 15 October 2006 (UTC)[reply]
