A personal story, moved here from the article:

"I travelled in the Stirling Castle in 1945. Embarking at Sydney Australia. We then travelled to Wellington New Zealand. All the families returning to UK were entertained by the localfolk to a wonderful picnic in a park. We were pitied as going to a place of privation, war time England. Apart from carrying many many passengers the ship was loaded with chilled Lamb. I remember watching the loading of the muslin wrapped carcases.

A long Pacific voyage ensued, we had boat drill frequently, were supposed to carry our life jackets at all times. the next landfall was the Panama Canal, very hot, very interesting.

Next was Bermuda, where we heard that VE day had been announced. The Ships Captain was not apparently known for his jollity, and would let no one ashore for celebrations. We watched all the fireworks and illuminations, from the decks. I still have my Victory tea menu, very ordinary. Listening to relatives later we had the worst of the deal, unlike our 'starving friends'.

Next an Atlantic journey in a convoy, a brush with an enemy submarine, I remember the depth charges rolling off the decks.

Landfall safely in Liverpool, where I was left sitting on a pile of our baggage whilst my mother arranged our transport, to my godmothers in Friern Barnet. I remember the smell of the soot, on the train journey south."

Union-Castle (and other British companies) used MV (for Motor Vessel), SS (for Steam Ship) and RMS (for Royal Mail Ship). Oldfarm 03:24, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)

That reminds me - the "Castles" carried mail to Cape Town, so wouldn't that make them all "RMS"s? That designations seems infrequently used of them though. Stan 04:40, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)

Cunard seemed to always use RMS. Within U-C the use of RMS varied. Generally the U-C liners that left Southampton on Thursdays were designated RMS - although some postcards of the era refer to the RMMV "Stirling Castle" (Royal Mail Motor Vessel). See:[[1]]. The "Bloemfontein Castle" carried mail - it was the only mail ship that called at Ascension and St. Helena - but I never heard it called RMS. Oldfarm 15:58, 18 Nov 2004 (UTC)
