WikiProject Dance To-do list:

Ballroom dance/Social dance[edit]

I removed the articles from Category:Ballroom Dance and put them in Category:Ballroom dance (one of them used to be hidden in the otherwise empty Category:Partner dance). We don't need both and the latter has the proper wiki-style capitalization.

I don't understand the distinction being made here between ballroom and Category:Social dance. Is this useful? Is social dance a subset of ballroom dance or is ballroom a subset of social? There seems to be a lot of overlap. (And there are a ton of articles that could go in a more specific category.)

What I'm getting out is that the sub-categories here seem to overlap greatly, which diminishes their usefulness. [[User:Aranel|Aranel ("Sarah")]] 20:09, 24 Sep 2004 (UTC)

The social dance article considers ballroom to be a subcategory. Of course, within ballroom, there's a distinction between competitive and social dances. And, in fact, the ballroom dance article has a section on "social ballroom." Since the social dance article is significantly more general, placing itself among several broad categories of dance, I'd probably go with that interpretation. It's more useful, since some social dances aren't ballroom, but all ballroom dances can be social.
The list of dance style categories might be quite useful for finding stuff to put in categories.
On the subject of what to put in each category... well, some of it is surely a matter of opinion, but if we all do our best, I imagine we'll get something livable eventually.
I hope that answers your question. I haven't really figured out categories, yet. -Salli 00:27, 25 Sep 2004 (UTC)
Neither ballroom dance nor social dance is strictly a superset of the other. Partner dancing can be divided into many orthogonal categories. Whether or not a partner dance is "social" is independent of its property as a "ballroom" dance (or "latin", or "country", or "swing"). Depending on the definition, there are even "social" dances that cannot strictly be called "partner" dances (e.g. contra dancing). There are potentially many useful categories for describing dances, and very few of them need be hierarchical or mutually exclusive. --Michael Richters 00:01, 13 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Butoh belongs in the B-s, but when I try to add it, I can't get that far down the screen. Kdammers 2 July 2005 09:50 (UTC)

Dance props[edit]

I'd been wondering about Sprung floor, it is in Category:Dance props Wouldn't Dance equipment be a better category name for all that? -Dmcq 17:51, 5 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Dance props just wasn't right. I put it under venues but that isn't quite right either. So I'm settin up a Dance equipment category which also also have dancewear and props under them even though quite rightly they are uder dance direct. I'll categorise barres in there too. Dancing robots, dance software[edit]

Dance science doesn't really seem to be the place for dancing robots (as distinct from robot dance) or for various types of dance software. I'll have a think about this, if sombody has ideas for categories for these be my guest. Dmcq (talk) 19:09, 21 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]

size of category (crossposted to the ballet category talk page)[edit]

Taxonomy is a balancing act; too many layers are as big an impediment as categories that are too large; I will try to do a little in the subcategory ballet if nobody objects. Robert Greer (talk) 17:11, 23 December 2007 (UTC)[reply]
