Mountmellick was known as "the Manchester of Ireland" but never solely as "little Manchester".
Currently there is no Quaker community and the "Meeting House" is not used for its original purpose.
What happened to the community?
Potato famine, downturn in industry, closure of the Canal network and World Wars all contributed to the population going from circa 8,000 in the 1800's to circa 3,400 circa 2000. Saying that Mountmellick is on the eve of new generation as more and more people are starting to move to the town. These folk are a combination of people who emigrated to other countries are coming back, city folk looking for a more relaxed life style and immigrants from Eastern Europe.
Was it ethnic cleansing? No!
