I miss Wally. I miss him a lot. Probably the closest I'm going to get in my life to know a Gandhi or King. I'm glad my daughter had the chance to get to know him.

Ditto that first paragraph -- did I write it?  ;) I check in here now and then, but I don't think it was me. I didn't know them when I lived nearby, and then I never missed a chance to visit when I had to come from across country. My daughter remembers pulling weeds with him in their garden when she was 5, and if I show her his photo, says she remembers him, his voice, and so far, he is the oldest person she's ever met. That's an example of vital age I'd like her to retain in memory.

She loved their soup, too, cooked on the woodstove. So did I.

Wally redefines the idea of "success" for many of us. And, to keep this short, I'll just say that it fits what Dr King said on his last night: "I won't have any money to leave behind. I won't have a lot of fancy things to leave behind. I just want to leave behind a committed life." And your memory in the lives of those you've touched.

I've never edited a page in Wikipedia -- if this saves, then it's for all of us who love Wally and Juanita. If it doesn't save, then it's just for you, Wally, my link to a part of myself I cherish most.
