realized that teixiera was spelled incorrectly on this page, as well as most of the links to this page, so I moved the article and updated the links -K_R 21:38, 15 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Date of birth: 1585[edit]

Monument of Pedro Teixeira in Cantanhede, stating 1585–1641

@MosesNotProphet: Unfortunately there has been much confusions of the persons with the same name, this happened in Worldcat and other catalogues. I think, there is agreement now, even if the very exact date of his birth (day, month) is not given, that he has been born 1585 in Cantahede. So does his town of birth and we should take is as stated for example by Senat of Brazil.

We should not use "b.1570-1585" any more. I'm presently correcting and adding german WP and WD (awful!). --Emeritus (talk) 10:59, 7 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

@Emeritus: I'm reluctant to affirm a specific birthyear for Teixeira because my sources differ. A lot of the more biographical information I've added regarding Pedro Teixeira came from Ernesto Cruz's History of Pará and he gives it as 1570. Navios e Portos' entry on Teixeira gave both dates as possible. Both portuguese and spanish wikipedias add 1587 as a possible birth date - though I couldn't find a source for that claim, so I didn't add it as a possible year.

I've briefly considered just leaving it as "b. 16th century" because that's the only certainty, but in the end I've decided that leaving it as "b.1570-1585" is the lesser evil. Should you find sources that make year 1585 the more probable one, I'd suggest you add a footnote explaining that there is a divergence as well.-- MosesNotProphet (talk) 00:17, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]

1587–1641 is given by Biblioteca Pública Arthur Vianna in Belém within their catalogue entries, which is against dates given by E. H. da Cruz of their Instituto Histórico e Geográfico do Pará. Cruz, while president of IHGP, also created a condecorative medal "A Medalha Pedro Teixeira" with 1570 - 1641 on it. But, caveat, Cruz never cites any source. (But all cites him, maybe he is not a reliable source). --Emeritus (talk) 09:16, 10 March 2022 (UTC)[reply]
