Order of Tracks[edit]

The track listing is switching side A and B of the EP. The listing shown here (Wolves, Lower; Gardening at Night; Carnival of Sorts (Boxcars); 1,000,000; Stumble) is the order that you would see in Dead Letter Office (album), which reversed the sides on purpose. As confirmed by R.E.M.'s official site, the track listing is

  1. 1,000,000
  2. Stumble
  3. Wolves, Lower
  4. Gardening at Night
  5. Carnival of Sorts (Boxcars)

After a bit of quick research, I'm inclined to believe that it's the EP cover (and, consequently, R.E.M.'s official site) that shows the tracks in the wrong order. Going by the discography here, the cassette edition (cover, side one, side two) has "Wolves, Lower" / "Gardening At Night" / "Carnival Of Sorts (Box Cars)" as the first side and "1,000,000" / "Stumble" as the second.
Obviously, though, it's not a given that the cassette and 12" had the sides in the same order. The same page has scans of the label of an early copy (here) and a later copy (here). In each case, it's the "Wolves, Lower" etc. side of the EP. Unfortunately, neither of these has any clear indication as to whether it's the first side or the second side, but the latter does have "SP-070502-A" written on it. The catalogue number of the EP is just SP 070502 (or SP 70502), so I'm guessing the "A" may indicate that it's Side A... To everyone with whom I've discussed this, I want to say now that I'm extremely grateful that you kept your arguments to me civil, and I can only hope I was civil as well (with perhaps the above paragraph that I wrote that I have removed aside - that was kind of rash). Anyway, I agree with you all, especially after discussing the matter a bit with Ethan Kaplan, founder and organizer and leader etc. of murmurs.com, which as far as I can tell is the most well-known R.E.M. fansite and has incredible postings going back many years to back up that claim. Odds are the printing on the back of the EP is the erroneous one. To add to this, the side clearly marked as side A has always had Wolves through Boxcars, and the other two on the clearly marked side B. So, I am changing the listing back and removing a sentence I added to the article. Thank you all for entertaining my thoughts on the matter. We need a source that we can cite that explicitly says "These songs are on side A and these are on side B, and the sleeve/vinyl is wrong". I've gone through my R.E.M. books and there's no consensus on the proper tracklisting, much less an explicit declaration like the one written above. Without clarification, it's faulty to assume that the vinyl is right but the sleeve is wrong. I've seen quite a few vinyl records with the sides marked incorrectly. The sleeve may very well be wrong, but we need a reliable source that says so so we can cite it. WesleyDodds (talk) 04:28, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

In the SP-070502 part list, the label part number SP-070502-A indicates the label for side A ('Chronic Town' - "Wolves, Lower"). SP-070502-B indicates the label for side B ('Poster Town' - "1,000,000") See here . Fantailfan (talk) 12:30, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
I second Fantailfan's argument. Leave the running order as is. You can't have more precise and final supporting proof than the original vinyl and cassette editions of the EP. BGC (talk) 18:06, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]
That doesn't mean that the side designations on the vinyl labels are correct; it just means that's how they are marked. There's no dispute that the original vinyl labels are marked this way (I certainly don't, since I've had my hands on a copy of the EP a number of times and noticed the discrepancy). What's disputed is which (the vinyl labeling or the sleeve) is the correct tracklisting. WesleyDodds (talk) 23:27, 26 April 2008 (UTC)[reply]

I happen to own Dead Letter Office and it also comes with cool Chronic Town liner notes, and it says "1,000,000", "Stumble", "Wolves, Lower", "Gardening At Night", and "Carnival of Sorts (Box Cars)". Apparently, the track listing was changed on Dead Letter Office because it sounded better. Plus, on vinyl, it doesn't really matter what side you play first. Or maybe, we could just put a note under the track listing saying that "1,000,000" started the vinyl version. I recommend everybody who owns a physical copy of the Dead Letter Office CD to check out the liner notes.
