Template:Regions of Portugal: statistical (NUTS3) subregions and intercommunal entities are confused; they are not the same in all regions, and should be sublisted separately in each region: intermunicipal entities are sometimes larger and split by subregions (e.g. the Metropolitan Area of Lisbon has two subregions), some intercommunal entities are containing only parts of subregions. All subregions should be listed explicitly and not assume they are only intermunicipal entities (which accessorily are not statistic subdivisions but real administrative entities, so they should be listed below, probably using a smaller font: we can safely eliminate the subgrouping by type of intermunicipal entity from this box).

Revised version of article[edit]

The revised version is based mostly on C. R. Boxer's work, which is well documented (and itself partly based on Carvalho). The following details have gone because they aren't in Boxer. If anyone wants to put them back, a citation would be nice:

He befriended the great mathematician Pedro Nunes. As a well known clinician, he ascended to the position of Royal Physician to the King of Portugal, John III of Portugal. He was appointed Chair of Natural philosophy at the University of Coimbra in 1530.

Boxer says he was at Lisbon University.

He befriended the Poet Luís Vaz de Camões.

If this is evident from Camões's poem, I'll put it back in.

He established himself in his estate at Bombay (See Bombay Castle) where he built his botanical garden, library and museum.

Boxer says he seldom went to Bombay and sublet his property there.

He married a rich old-christian woman, Brianda de Solis

Boxer says she was a New Christian.

His books were also censured and burnt.

Boxer says there's no evidence of this. Garcia's book is rare but not that rare considering its date and origin.

As he put it in his famous book, "it was enough to see well in order to do good science."

Typos in a quote from de Orta's Colóquios[edit]

There are several typos in the quote from de Orta's Colóquios in the section 'Work':

The sentence "The Portuguese, who navigate over a greater part of the world only procedure a knowledge of now best to dispose of that merchandise of what they bring here and what they shall take back. "

should actually be "The Portuguese, who navigate over a greater part of the world only procure a knowledge of how best to dispose of that merchandise of what they bring here and what they shall take back. "

My correction is based on the translation of Orta's Colóquios at archive.org: page 86 of de Orta's Colóquios

I'm going to go ahead and fix the typos, since it is pretty clear it was just a transcription error, but I wanted to document where I verified the information, in case anyone is interested.

Contradiction[edit]

In 1565 an inquisitorial court was opened in Goa. Active persecution against Jews, secret Jews, Hindus and New Christians began.

During his lifetime, Orta had been protected from the Goa Inquisition by his friend and patron, Martim Afonso de Sousa, Governor-General of Portuguese India from 1542 to 1545.[17]

How could De Sousa protect Garcia from an institution that wasn't even established yet? I have not removed it because it is referenced, but I see a contradiction. --Error (talk) 20:03, 17 October 2019 (UTC)[reply]
