Untitled[edit]

The article used to say this: "1985" was originally written and recorded by the band SR-71, led by Mitch Allan, who co-wrote the song with Jaret Reddick." This is false. The song was written by Mitch Allan and John Allen. It was released on their album Here We Go Again. AFTER it was released, SR-71 gave permission to Bowling For Soup to re-work it and release it on their own album. The re-worked version has the writing credits of Allan, Allen, Reddick. Jaret Reddick had nothing at all to do with the original version. —Preceding unsigned comment added by MrCheck (talkcontribs) 19:24, 11 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Charts[edit]

A while back, this article said that the single reached #35 or #38... which, if any, of those are right? -- LaotianBoy1991

So anyone care to compile a list of videos spoofed by that song's video? I haven't seen it unfortunately... Grue 06:22, 18 Dec 2004 (UTC)

What's with that description of the color of her car and Mitch? --71.112.183.85 20:47, 19 February 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I have added a little bit to the page, my addition in italics:

The song/video is also popular with the generation of people currently in their 30s or early 40s as nostalgia for the pop culture of their youth, although the song makes no effort to imitate the style of the '80s, with the exception of the line "on the radio", which resembles the timbre of the voice singing the verses in the Buggles' "Video Killed the Radio Star", known for being the first video ever played on MTV in 1981 (this may or may not be intentional).

The timbre being the same is fact, but as for the nod, as you can see, that's my interpretation. Can anybody prove or disprove it? Mapsax 00:46, 13 March 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I'm changing it back to refer to The Buggles. The current reference ("A time when sitcoms and game shows were popular on the radio") is utterly ridiculous. 209.255.33.150 (talk) 07:35, 23 August 2008 (UTC)[reply]

YouTube links[edit]

This article is one of thousands on Wikipedia that have a link to YouTube in it. Based on the External links policy, most of these should probably be removed. I'm putting this message here, on this talk page, to request the regular editors take a look at the link and make sure it doesn't violate policy. In short: 1. 99% of the time YouTube should not be used as a source. 2. We must not link to material that violates someones copyright. If you are not sure if the link on this article should be removed, feel free to ask me on my talk page and I'll review it personally. Thanks. ---J.S (t|c) 06:47, 7 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Nirvana...[edit]

I have listened to the song everywhere about thirty times and it says in said song, "...way before Nirvana", so I have put in that this is a reference to the American alternative rock band, not the concept of immortal happiness. The link didn't even exist, anyways, so I have included that for that reason as well. Fishdert 12:46, 20 June 2007 (UTC)Fishdert[reply]

Sounds good to me. Nice addition. --SuperNova |T|C| 21:53, 20 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Other Songs[edit]

I'm deleting the "Other Songs" section. It's useless and irrelevant. It lists other songs called "1985", or some version of that, but have nothing to do with this particular song itself. --24.209.174.88 (talk) 05:32, 13 November 2009 (UTC)[reply]

References to 1980's culture[edit]

Without sources, all of that text was just original research trivia. I removed it. I'm not saying it doesn't have a place in the article - but it only has a place if there's a reliable secondary source that exists to confirm it and raise to the level of significance required to have it included in the article. Otherwise it's no better than some fan's music blog, and that's not what we're doing here. Rockypedia (talk) 03:21, 5 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]

However, the subject of the whole song is 1980s culture... AnonMoos (talk) 02:51, 6 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
That's great. You still need some indication of why some trivia explaining a bit in the song is significant, and a reliable source to back up that info. Rockypedia (talk) 02:56, 6 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I don't know why you're personalizing it to me. AnonMoos (talk) 03:24, 6 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't, really. I meant the royal "you", as in, anyone who wants to add their own interpretations of this song needs to find a reliable source. My apologies if it seemed I was directing it directly at you. Rockypedia (talk) 03:39, 6 August 2017 (UTC)[reply]
