Untitled[edit]

This classification has a rather arbitrary, nay McCarthyite, tinge. Many of those included had left by '56, and where Marxists first and foremost - a rather different idea. EPThompson and several others here listed were by no stretch of the imagination tankies. If this is an 'are you now or have you ever been' classification then many Labour Party members later considered right-wing, would need to be included! Originator, please explain.! Linuxlad

Wow, something I did got called McCarthyite, there's a first, hehe. I'm actually a Communist myself and think that listing those who are now, or have ever been communists is not only interesting but important as it shows the much-overlooked role that communism has played in British politics. It's not intended to disgrace those who have now renounced communist policies (although it'd be nice to think that should they stumble across Wikipedia it'd remind them to renew their membership...). The introduction to the category makes it fairly clear that the list shows those who have been active, not just those who now are. Many of those that had left the CPGB by 1956 still identified themselves as communists (I used the small 'c' so as not to imply a direct party affiliation), as being a tankie and being a communist don't go hand in hand, as I've just added Tony Cliff, for example, who couldn't be described as a tankie in the same way as I could. I think it's a reasonable category, and quite a helpful one, too. Hope that clears it up. Oh, you've reminded me, I should add John Reid... Dafyddyoung 11:11, 28 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Bernard Shaw[edit]

John Peet[edit]

Likewise with John Peet who I think was never a member of the CPGB and could never join the Socialist Unity Party in the German Democratic Republic or its West Berlin branch as he always kept his British citizenship. Can we check?
