Should this be moved to Karl Wernicke? In my experience, Karl is more commonly spelled as Wernicke's first name, but I'm not sure of the proper English form. In the meantime, I put in a redirect

Yes, it should. Every book I've read spells his name this way.

Polish vs. German[edit]

This man was born in Silesia, which at that time was not part of Poland (there was no Poland), but instead part of the Austrio-Hungarian Empire. He was educated in what is now Germany, practiced medicine in what is now Germany, served as a German-speaking army physician in the Franco-Prussian War, and, most important, wrote his landmark works entirely and exclusively in German. He died in what is now Germany.

Why is he categorized as a Polish neurologist? He might as well be categorized as an Austrio-Hungarian neurologist, or a Habsburg neurologist, or a Prussian neurologist. If one were going to select a country as of 2006 to which he would profess allegiance, how could you pick anything other than Germany? -ikkyu2 (talk) 05:07, 17 September 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Karl Wernicke was German and simply isn't a subject of legitimate dispute. His town of birth is now part of Poland, but that is a completely different subject. Ujalm 19:41, 14 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]
