I guess you refeering to "Medieval Cities" (1925) (originally published in english language as result of material wrote for some american university conferences ). This piece is part of the "Pirenne thesis" so I guess that's the reason why it wasn't mentioned specifically. Basically Pirenne claims that the crisis of urbanization of High Middle Ages was caused by the Arabic Expansion as well as the economical one (Mahomet et Charlemagne). Perhaps this article should focus more on the man, and a new "Pirenne Thesis" article be created?

The spread of Islam as the cause of Carolingian "barbarism" or whatever (the ruralization of the European economy) is not simply contested. It is dead. No respectable medievalist would adhere to it today. Yet Wiki insists on thinking it still valid more or less. It is not. Wiki is wrong as it is so often. And it is clear that Wiki is written by amateurs who don't know much and certainly not as much as they should. History of Belgium written in French or Russian or both?

Did Pirenne write a history of Belgium in French as it written in the first part of the article? The second part of the article says that he wrote a history of Europe in Russian. Western / Eastern

In the "Islam" part of the article, a sentence says: " Instead, the Muslim conquest of north Africa made the Mediterranean a barrier, cutting western Europe off from the east, enabling the Carolingians, especially Charlemagne, to create a new, distinctly western form of government."

This is not altogether clear to me. Even if we accept that France is "western" Europe, and Spain, located more to the west, is not, it's not clear to me from which "east" this Western Europe was cut off, in Pirenne's theory. Not from what we call today Eastern Europe, I guess. The only country mentioned is Egypt (for papyrus), but doubtless, Muslim Spain also accounts for "the wealthier parts of the world". Aren't we talking about "North and South" instead of East and West? If Pirenne formulated it that way, he surely must have explained why? Any Pirenne expert around? Thanks!
