Was he born in December or in October (as said in the german language Wikipedia)? Stern 23:22, 2 Jul 2004 (UTC)

These lks from what is now penny postage may be about Hill's picture being on them, in which case "==See also==" is a horrible disposition of them. If not, discard them.

Rowland Hill's Burial[edit]

Is Rowland Hill buried at Highgate or Westminster Abbey?

According to the Westminster Abbey article, he is commemorated in the Abbey but buried at Highgate. Changing article text accordingly. Vilĉjo 17:10, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]
This has been reversed by 88.144.74.119 with no source or reference for this action This would seem bad etiquette. Surely that as this matter now seems to be in some doubt, contributors on this point should be required to cite their source or run the risk that it will be removed and placed on the discussion page until the matter is resolved.--DonBarton 22:42, 28 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

The Abbey's own website claims that he is buried there. The same claim is also made in "Who's Buried Where in England" by Douglas Greenwood. I'd be inclined to give both of those a fair amount of weight, so unless authoritative competing citations can be given, I think it should be left as it is. Vilĉjo 10:54, 8 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Today I received the following email from the Westminster Abbey's "Assistant Keeper of the Muniments" and it states:

Yes, it is definite that the Rowland Hill who died in 1879 is buried in the Abbey, with a bust by the grave. "The Times" of Friday 5 Sept 1879 states "Sir Rowland Hill was buried yesterday in Westminster Abbey. He lies in St Paul's chapel..." People who are members of a public library in London who have subscribed to the Times Digital Archive can type in their membership number and look at the actual Times entry, or go to the British Library newspaper section to see the original paper for the account of the funeral and burial here.

I don't know who puts the information on the findagrave website - one may have followed another in putting the wrong information on. The Times website seems not to have looked at its own paper.

We are shortly to put information about Rowland Hill and his burial here on our own website (Library section - People buried).

So that settles it. I have seen a flickr photo of a headstone for his widow, son, Pearson Hill, and other family members stated to be in Highgate but the complete headstone is not visible so cannot see what is says about Rowland Hill. Article name[edit]

Normally, for an article on a person, a bracketed disambiguation qualifier states the person's role, not his/her field—e.g. "(musician)" not "(music)". "Rowland Hill (mail)" looks very odd to me—I'd prefer something like "(postal reformer)". However, MoS recommends that it be restricted to one word where possible. Any suggestions? The closest you could get would be "Rowland Hill (reformer)" (which is vague) or "Rowland Hill (bureaucrat)" (which is trite). I suggest "postal reformer" or "civil servant" — there's no good single-word description. David 19:11, 22 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rugby[edit]

David Mortimer's book "Great Rugby Clangers" mentions Rowland Hill as Secretary of the RFU and referee of the match between England and the NZ Natives. I a not sure if this counts as an encyclopedic reference. Arachrah (talk) 13:54, 31 December 2012 (UTC)[reply]

Political Anachronism?[edit]

In the midst of the section about postal reform it is mentioned that Ramsay McCulloch and Richard Cobden "attacked the policies of privilege and protection of the Tory government". Is the writer referring to the government in power at the time, which was in fact, through the 1830s, WHIG? If it is referring to other governments than that current to the postal reforms the statement is better moved elsewhere.Cloptonson (talk) 06:00, 24 October 2014 (UTC)[reply]
