I once went to the Shoals Jug Rock and touched it for good luck before a basketball game at the Soals Catfish Fest. We then won the next 2 games. Does anyone else know of any free-statnding table rock formation good luck stories?

Jug Rock, House Rock, Pinnacle Rock[edit]

Not being familiar with Martin County, Indiana, I can't write with authority about the lay of the land there; but I note discrepancies among printed authorities about these feature names. I think that the Geographic Names Information System has probably confused House Rock with Jug Rock and has labeled Jug Rock "Pinnacle Rock." The 1998 DeLorme Indiana Atlas and Gazetteer, at p. 56, B6, shows Jug Rock at the north edge of the town of Shoals, while TopoQuest's map labels the same feature as "Pinnacle Rock." The GNIS entry for House Rock gives "Jug Rock" as a variant name and cites the 1876 Illustrated Historical Atlas of the State of Indiana published in Chicago by Baskin, Forster and Company as authority. With all respect to the hard-working people who oversee the GNIS, I think that they might profit from consulting the 1871 Second Report of the Geological Survey of Indiana cited in the article in which State Geologist T.J. Cox distinguished Jug Rock from its parent sandstone formation, "the "Pinnacle." My tentative conclusion, which I have not "ground-truthed," is that House Rock is House Rock and that Pinnacle Rock is Jug Rock. -- Cuppysfriend 17:45, 23 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
