Melbourne City Link, Burnley tunnel: inbye east of Swan St shaft, July 1997

This is the working face of the top heading, not far from the deepest point of the Burnley tunnel at Swan St shaft. Primary lining consisted of shotcrete and steel arches.

The spoil is 400 million year old Silurian rock; the puddle in front of the face was probably one of the earliest indications that all was not well with the geotechnical engineer's calculations of water pressure.

The remainder of the face (bench approx 4 m deep) was excavated at a later stage.
