Orphaned references in The Velvet Rope[edit]

I check pages listed in Category:Pages with incorrect ref formatting to try to fix reference errors. One of the things I do is look for content for orphaned references in wikilinked articles. I have found content for some of The Velvet Rope's orphans, the problem is that I found more than one version. I can't determine which (if any) is correct for this article, so I am asking for a sentient editor to look it over and copy the correct ref content into this article.

Citation errors[edit]

There are many references to issues of Billboard that for some reason are listed as being "published" by Google Books (in 1997???). I fixed one but I'm tired and may not get back to fixing them all. Anyone watching this: please fix these. ―Justin (koavf)TCM 09:30, 28 July 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Image[edit]

To avoid what is about to become an edit war, let's open this discussion to multiple editors. File:Janet Jackson – The Velvet Rope (Official Album Cover).png comes directly from uDiscover Music, which is connected to Universal Music Group, and is also reflective of the artwork used on Apple Music, Spotify and Tidal. Meanwhile, File:The Velvet Rope.png supposedly comes from Discogs.com—which was only added when its verifiability was questioned, which has been classified as an unreliable source for Wikipedia. Which artwork should be used within the article. Will be pinging multiple long-time music-related editors to the discussion in the hopes of gaining a greater sense of idea.

@Livelikemusic: Obviously the one that is better quality, the one that is backed up by three streaming services and an official record label, and the one that can be attributed to reliable sources. Aka File:Janet Jackson – The Velvet Rope (Official Album Cover).png. D🐶ggy54321 (let's chat!) 16:22, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
I fully concur with Doggy54321. Discogs should be avoided as much as possible. On another note, IndianBio hasn't been around since May 2019 except for one last edit five months later, so I don't expect him to respond here when he appears to have left Wikipedia altogether by this point despite expressing hopes to resume prior activity. SNUGGUMS (talk / edits) 16:28, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
My point is that the cover does indeed exist in different levels of saturation from a variety of reliable sources, an example of this would be Janet Jackson's official website. I suggest using the image from the official website, as the site provides links to the album on Apple Music and Amazon, which both have different levels of saturation, and as such includes all versions. QuestFour (talk) 16:33, 22 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
Your point is semi-invalid, however, because that is not the excuse you originally gave (via the edit summary and how your actions show. Nevertheless, three third-party sources and one secondary, have supported "Janet Jackson – The Velvet Rope (Official Album Cover).png" as the valid cover. And you uploading File:Janet Jackson – The Velvet Rope.png (which, by the way, does not match the source's file) as an attempt to own the upload is purely unacceptable and not helpful to this discussion. Not to mention, while a discussion for consensus is happening, the image generally should not be changed while a discussion is in-progress and has been for less than two-to-three days. By your definition, "Janet Jackson – The Velvet Rope (Official Album Cover).png" represents more "versions" via cited sources and streaming platforms. Primary sources should be avoided, especially if secondary and third parties exist, which they do in this case. So far, three users (myself included) believe "Janet Jackson – The Velvet Rope (Official Album Cover).png" (which, again, is supported by Apple Music as previously mentioned and linked above) is the appropriate upload. As much, Amazon MP3, audio cassette and vinyl pressing are also more closely supportive of "Janet Jackson – The Velvet Rope (Official Album Cover).png" than both the other files you have uploaded within a month of each other. The audio CD listing seems to be a low-quality scanned copy, as even user-uploaded images' colours match the other file. "Citing a "different variation" could also easily be cited, or it simply comes down to some images may or may not be scanned in and not done so digitally, and such changes could be handled via a caption and/or note, with proper citation. Arguing and violating WP:3RR to try and prove a "variation" point is unhelpful, and, if that were the case, so many more images would be warred over. livelikemusic (TALK!) 01:45, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Doggy54321 and SNUGGUMS: Pinging you both to see latest discussions and note the newly-uploaded file, etc. livelikemusic (TALK!) 01:56, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Livelikemusic: Why are there now three images? It’s clear that this is a game of one of these things is not like the others. As well, I concur with what you said entirely in regard to the images. D🐶ggy54321 (let's chat!) 02:52, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
@Doggy54321: In addition to that, in my viewpoint, it is an attempt to own the uploaded image to a personal preference in misrepresentation of the arguments presented above. livelikemusic (TALK!) 02:59, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]
That makes sense. D🐶ggy54321 (let's chat!) 03:03, 24 February 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I personally don't have any qualms with using primary sources for files as long as they match the uploads. My bigger concern was that one is of higher quality and more frequently used (thus making it preferable), and the attempt to own a file by inserting one's upload is problematic.
