To the best of my understanding some of the recent updates seriously distort this page: the addition of material about "Fresnel fibres" in particular. This is a very fringe concept accepted by almost no-one in the field other than the proposer.

This looks to me to be a researcher trying to drtive up his citations by inserting his left-field ideas into Wiki. The IP matches the relevant institution. Someone who really knows this field should take a look.

Hello, I just thought to request that whoever wrote this page, and possibly any other Wikipedians who wrote on technical subjects, cite references. For example, I am looking for the original Yariv and Yeh publication of 1979 on "Bragg Fibers" that is mentioned roughly half way through the article. Normally, this may satisfy either someone very familiar with the industry, Yariv, and Yeh or the non-technical passerby, both of which seek no further inquiry but to satisfy the initial general knowledge requirement. However, to facilitate any additional inquiry would mean providing some sort of citation. As I am sure most are aware, without knowledge of the publisher it is an unfortunately long and arduous task of tracking claims, such as the one mentioned above, since the journals for scientific and technical publication are so numerous and obscure to most libraries.

photonic-crystal textbook available online[edit]

Hi all, we (at MIT) have recently published a new advanced-undergraduate level textbook on photonic crystals, including a chapter on photonic-crystal fibers, and the publisher gave us permission to post a PDF of the book online. I suspect it would make a useful reference for readers (and editors) of this article (you are already linking my tutorial presentations), but I won't add it myself due to WP:COI. Serious issues of balance and comprehensiveness[edit]

I dropped in to look at this article and noticed that there have been significant changes. I see also an anonymous post above raising the possibility that some editors here may be operating with a personal/professional agenda.

I ask regular editors to declare whether they have a CoI in inserting any references to scientists or concepts. This includes posts by researchers themselves, or their colleagues or students.

Is the reference list balanced and comprehensive? From my limited knowledge of the field, it does not appear to be. The matter may have to be brought to the attention of admins if it can't be sorted out, and it may be necessary to revert the text. In addition, I will notify the relevant WikiProject, seeking advice on what direction to take. Tony (talk) 03:19, 23 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Whilst not an expert, I did look up some of these articles on photonic crystal fibres and others - most cite each other but generally a few prominent crystal authors don't cite the other work. They are certainly a biased piece of work focussing too much on photonic crystals with little mention of the original work of Bell Labs and indeed other work which predated that, such as Yeh and Yariv's seminal Bragg fibres that almost certainly must have inspired much of the crystal work but is rarely cited by crystal people (and I wonder if this is because their reading is narrow or they are too egotistical pushing an agenda by trivialising alternative work - a colleague met one of those authors and he was under the distinct impression the fellow felt he deserved the nobel prize!!! My colleague said it was too bad it went to someone who probably would not rate in that author's own assesment of the literature). So it is nice to see others insert additional material being added (such as Yeh and Yariv's Bragg and Fresnel fibres), which is extremely important work if just to show there are alternative research directions to crystal analogies (some of which could not originally have been correct). I for one would not have known about these alternatives just reading some of the biased review articles from some corners (including some of the inappropriate responses here) so it is important we don't compromise Wikipedia without individual views. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 129.78.32.22 (talk) 04:16, 13 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Article contains unrelated information[edit]

The article contains significant amount of unrelated information. Sentences about microstructured fibers, air clad fibers, Fresnel fibers should be removed. And part about PCFs being "not the best solution for many applications" also does not belong to this short article.
