Although the “Kobe Bryant 2014” file has been the longstanding picture for this page, the “Kobe Bryant 2015” file is a better fit for that specific photo because it captures his face-to-face profile as Bryant is facing the camera and it is also a more recent picture. Lead images should be natural and appropriate representations of the topic
It's preferable and to show a basketball player playing basketball in a "natural" shot with the ball and his facial features visible. Giving precedence to a "more recent photo" only applies to living people.
