Main image change by Lib3rtine[edit]

Lib3rtine is currently changing cat images on a number of pages. In the case of the American shorthair image change, I am nuetral. Could people please compare the current image with that in the history and discuss if a revert is desired? LinaMishima 18:46, 1 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Ok, upload it here again then with the correct licence information, then place it and the previous image in here as thumbnails to be discussed. Old main image was terrible[edit]

I thought this website was supposed to look professional. Why are there such terrible pictures on so many articles? I changed it to a better picture of an american shorthair cat. Go ahead, revert it to the circa-1995 digital camera look of the last picture.

Main cat image[edit]

Since the image Lib3rtine replaced the old image with was their own, there could potentially be an aspect of bias in thier opinions. Hence on the left is the lib3rtine's image, and on the right is the old image:

  • Does either one or both images significantly contribute to detailing the American Shorthair breed?
  • Are there any other problems with both of them?
  • Should only one image be used on the article, or both?

Given the {regphoto} tag, I suspect both photos should be present. In which case, which one provides the better example of an American shorthair? LinaMishima 00:23, 2 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Changed the photo[edit]

I was a short-term (2 yrs) American Shorthair breeder, with CFA registered cats. I added photos of 2 of my cats (one a young kitten) to the website. I took both of these photos, one of which, the kitten shot, has been in a pet magazine article featuring the breed.

I hope other people will feel free to add photos and more info if they'd like. This is a rather short article. I'm not that great a writer though. =-)

Unclear[edit]

I just added {{Confusing}} to the article. It switches back and forth between American Shorthairs and Domestic Shorthairs without explaining what the relationship is between the two, and what the differences are. It is also unclear which pictures are ASH and which are DSH. If DSH is a different breed, then perhaps it should have its own article. If it's a subset of ASH, like if it's the name for a mixed breed cat with one ASH parent, or a ASH that isn't up to show quality, then that should be explained. It looks like the current version is the result of many edits that added info, corrected info, changed the breed name, etc. but now needs a cleanup for overall clarity. --Icarus (Hi!) 23:02, 2 January 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Encyclopedia-style writing[edit]

I'm not an expert at writing encyclopedia entries by any stretch, but the following line seems un-encyclopedian: "You probably have seen an example of this striking variety in television and magazine advertising or in recent movie roles." (Line 27 or thereabouts.)

Wrong Cat Photo[edit]

 – The 2009–2010 photo was replaced, and no longer even exists on Commons.

The current photo of the cat on the front page of this article is not an American Shorthair; rather appears to be a domestic shorthair (e.g, standard house cat). Agreed. It lacks the breed standard facial characteristics of an American Shorthair. The head is too narrow and the muzzle too long and pointed. The wedge-shaped head is clearly visible in other pictures in the uploader's Flickr photostream. Any breeder or cat show judge would definitively identify this as not a purebred ASH but a mixed breed DSH.--Lewisclark (talk) 03:16, 15 February 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Main Cat Image Redux[edit]

I think the main image should be a pedigreed version of the American Shorthair classic silver tabby. That is what first comes to mind when I think of the breed. Main image currently is a silver shaded cat, which is a recognized color, but in reality, is quite uncommon. If one was to goto a cat show, you would likely see the class silver tabby, followed by the classic brown tabby.College Watch (talk) 16:06, 17 February 2019 (UTC)[reply]

@College Watch: Not "my breed", so I can't vouch for these specific claims of what is most representative. But, yes, the main photo should be as representative of codified breed standards and typical in-practice breed appearance as we can muster. That said, there aren't thousands of people watching this page and working on it; some DIY is called for. Have you checked commons.wikimedia.org for additional images? The regulars over at commons have worked out methods of finding usable (e.g., Creative Commons-licensed) photos on various sites, and may be able to help.
