2008 comment[edit]

Stray bracket[edit]

I see a stray bracket at the top of the article... couldn't fix it myself after looking at it for a while. Can anyone else take a look?

Looking at it again, I can see it's attributed to the citybox markup somehow... IE if you take out the skyline image it's not there anymore.

Mercedes Benz is not in the city limits[edit]

I suggest you look at the GIS site for the City of Tuscaloosa at [1]. Or you can look at the screenshot I took of the GIS site: [2].The roads around MB are in the city limits but the plant itself is actually in Tuscaloosa County. The plant itself a Foreign Trade Zone thus in actuality part of Germany so in reality neither of you are correct. But the area radially away from the plant has been incorporated by the city and is serviced by Tuscaloosa County (sheriff, water, etc.).

That bit about "part of Germany" is quite an overstatement. The FTZ status allows deferment of some customs duties to facilitate the manufacturing process, but, as the Board's FAQ states, "FTZ sites and facilities remain within the jurisdiction of local, state or federal governments or agencies." --Dystopos (talk) 22:29, 7 March 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Population discrepancy[edit]

After noticing a suspicious change to the population (increased by just 5), I looked up the cited pop data. The lead paragraph says, "population of 83,052 (2006 U.S. Census Bureau Estimate)." But the cited Estimate is not for 2006; it's for 2005. And the CSV file referred to lists the pop. as 81,358, not 83,052.

A question about "capstone"[edit]

The University of Alabama is refered to as The Capstone. More than likely in reference to it's importance to the state of Alabama.--Kchambers (talk) 07:45, 7 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

As early as 1913, University president George H. Denny referred to the University as the capstone of education in the state. It stuck. See The University of Alabama: A Pictorial History, University of Alabama Press, 1983, p. 152. Clark Center

I assume you are speaking about some of the passing references to Tuscaloosa "in popular culture" like the bill maher reference or should we just try and find citations for everything? Its been a while since i worked on a city article. Personaly i think most of the popular culture section is nothing more than some city preening and yeah i live in Tuscaloosa so I'm guilty too. Please fix vandalism (post-tornado)[edit]

Present tense changed to past, as if the city has ceased to exist after destructive tornado. This user has been banned, but the vandalism remains. There should also be external links added to (legit and carefully checked out) emergency aid sites.

Perhaps there should also be a new Wikipedia article on the relief efforts.

Issues with language and content[edit]

This article is very long and reads more like an eager press release than an encyclopedia article. Among the excess of information, I was not able to find an explanation of the origin of Tuscaloosa's name - which I, and possibly most of the world, have heard for the first time after the April 2011 tornadoes. You have my best wishes for the recovery.

The history section boasts a flattering nickname from last year, scenery shots for a film of no significance, and recent regulations about bicycle taxis. The economy section lists about 20 shopping centres, none of which are explained to be notable. "Cornerstone" and "anchoring" sound like promotional language to me. Tuscaloosa's universities have their own articles, and could be adequately described in one paragraph (or sentence) each, as on the more encyclopaedic articles for the cities of Adelaide, Calgary, and Leeds. Why, I'll find the Strip pulsating with night life, and I now know where to find professors mingling with students, and which bar is smoke free. Is this is a travel guide?

How significant is it? Merely significant enough to mention how it could improved. If other articles about American cities face similar problems, then they could be improved in similar ways. I don't make a habit of reading about American cities, and it is this one I found.   • The article has become a bit cluttered with extraneous and unencyclopedic information. I've been rather busy as of late so I haven't had the chance to go through and clean up the necessary areas. I personally have no problem with the current page and many people I know who frequent the page don't have any problem with it either. I do feel some of the paragraphs should be reformatted and a few pictures should be moved to the gallery, but other than that, I'm fine with the current page.

Arial Pictures of Devastation Needed[edit]

Can someone experienced in Wikipedia images help? There should be some pictures taken from the air. I have seen some that are incredible but don't know enough about Wikipedia image guidelines.

Some news images can be used (it depends on how the owner designates and tags the picture) and there are other ways to get legal public domain pictures. Anyone here have anything constructive to offer rather than just saying "you can't do this / can't do that"?

Concerning Northport in the cityscape listing[edit]

I hate to sound nitpicky, but should Northport be mentioned in the cityscape section? I understand that everyone considers Northport to be apart of Tuscaloosa, including myself, but I don't believe its population or total area size is factored into the city of Tuscaloosa's numbers...

Climate Section[edit]

I'd like to revise the whole climate section. I like the current information that is presented, and I would like to include all of it's information. However, I feel that there is additional information (especially flooding, drought, heat, fog, mild winter, etc...) that should be explained. The entire climate section looks like a blob; the temperature/precip figure looks awful, and I hope anyone who is capable will pursue fixing it.

Description of name change timing[edit]

If it was changed in 1901 (or 1900), you can say it was changed at the start of the century (depending on when you count centuries as starting). If it changed kinda gradually, then say that. And perhaps mention a couple of significant stages in the process, or at least hint at the order of magnitude of the change-process’s length. I don’t remember what vague wording I replaced it with, but it was better than pretending to have conveyed some verifiable info, when we don’t have anything with a WP:RS. OK?
