Admirals nickname use[edit]

When they joined the AHL was there any controversy over the Admirals name since Norfolk already had it? Did they have to pay Norfolk to be able to keep the name? Probably would be worth mentioning if someone can find some verifiable source on that. 67.46.0.13 06:25, 21 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Doesn't look like there was any controversy at all, according to this news report from the time: http://www2.jsonline.com/sports/etc/jun01/admiral05060401.asp. The official logo includes the "ADMIRALS" wordmark. The "Admiral Head" is only used on the uniforms. Rumor has it that the team will be getting a new uniform - and possibly a new logo - for 2007.

The Admirals WILL be introducing a new logo and color scheme for the 2006-2007 season. They will be unveiling it on August 2nd in Milwaukee at the Summerfest grounds. Rumor has it that the new colors are primarily black and blue, with red and white accents. What the new logo will be is being kept tightly under wraps.

Personal feelings about said logo aside - the change in color is a radical one for the franchise. The Admirals have always had some form of red, white and blue in their uniforms. Founding date[edit]

I'm really iffy on the founding date. The team started out as an amatuer club. When did it go pro? When it went to the IHL?? The Hershey Bears are another example of amatuer to pro. ccwaters 04:04, 24 August 2005 (UTC)[reply]

The tradition states that the club started as the Milwaukee Flyers in 1970, then played as an independent for three years until they joined the USHL in 1973. When the USHL made it clear that they were going to switch to amateur (Juniors) status, Lloyd Pettit moved the team to the IHL in 1977. jwhouk 03:52, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Rich Sirois win record[edit]

Sirois win record might be slightly higher. The 119 tally does not include any possible wins from the 83-84 season when he apparently played 4 games for the Ads. The problem is that the IHL didn't keep goaltender won-loss records in the 1970's and 1980's. I could scour the Journal boxes from that year, or see if I can contact the Admirals to see if they have anything in their archives about it. jwhouk 03:50, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]

Colors[edit]

I don't see the problem with having specificity when it comes to the Admiral's colors. They are definitely cardinal (color) and Vegas gold (See this for what color Vegas gold is). The colors were taken from SSUR.org's Uniform Colors List for the AHL. The colors are listed as Maroon, Blue, Black, Copper and Silver. Hope that helps. jwhouk 03:47, 11 May 2006 (UTC)[reply]
In a similar vein, I'm going to change the new colors back to the way the team describes them. The sweater might look gray, but the team color is silver (much the same way the Oakland Raiders uniforms were gray until the introduction of synthetic fabrics that can give a metallic sheen). Well, the new colors are up on the SSUR database, and listed as Milwaukee Admirals Black, Milwaukee Admirals Blue "Ice Blue", Milwaukee Admirals Silver, and White. Milwaukee Admirals Gray is listed as a "Secondary color - road uniforms only", and Milwaukee Admirals Green and Milwaukee Admirals Yellow are listed as "Additional colors - secondary logo only".[2] I dunno - I don't see any green in that secondary logo, but he ought to know. Maybe there's something that hasn't been unveiled yet.
As far as this entry goes, the convention appears to be only to list the primary colors (see the pages for Norfolk Admirals, Omaha Ak-Sar-Ben Knights, Syracuse Crunch, Peoria Rivermen and others), so the colors in the entry should probably remain "black, silver and ice blue". --Chancemichaels 18:49, 3 November 2006 (UTC)Chancemichaels[reply]

Founding date, cont.[edit]

Can we come to a consensus as to the proper format for the founding date, rather than reverting and re-reverting? 1970-1971 is accurate, but January 1970 is even more so (showing that the club was formed in advance of the hockey season, halfway in the previous season). Just realized - 1970-1971 is not accurate. The 1970-1971 season started in November of 1970 and ran through the spring of 1971 (as the name would suggest). The Wings played their first game in January of 1970, in what would have been the 1969-1970 season had they belonged to a full-season league. So we have a choice of "1970" or "1969-1970." But since they were an independent team, not in a full-season league, 1970 seems to be the best choice. --Chancemichaels 20:21, 7 November 2006 (UTC)Chancemichaels[reply]

Baseball and Hockey[edit]

Coincidentally but unrelated, the two cities' baseball franchises share a reverse affiliation, as the Nashville Sounds are the AAA affiliate of the Milwaukee Brewers.

I wouldn't say it is unrelated, especially given The Admirals were purchased in June 2005 by a group of investors, led by Harris J. Turer, including Milwaukee Brewers owner Mark Attanasio, assistant general manager Gord Ash and pitcher Ben Sheets.

Turer is also #2 shareholder of the Brewers (as of 2006) according to http://onmilwaukee.com/sports/articles/harristurer.html and is on the board of directors http://www.biztimes.com/news/2010/4/30/bravo-harris-turer-majority-owner-ceo-of-milwaukee-admirals-hockey-club

Craig Leipold was the majority owner of the Predators - at that time he was on the stadium commission for Milwaukee's Miller Park http://minnesota.publicradio.org/collections/special/columns/news_cut/archive/2008/01/who_is_craig_leipold.shtml

Also, Frontier airlines currently offers nonstop daily service from Milwaukee to/from Nashville - which began with the Milwaukee-based Midwest Express. ME was the official airline of the Brewers, Admirals and Predators at the time of the Brewers and Admirals purchases (http://www.jsonline.com/blogs/sports/36169999.html). In minimal googling, I was unable to find a more direct connection between Midwest Express and the Brewers/Admirals organizations.
