Article in need of attention[edit]

For one thing the second paragraph is mostly about Ninja / video game Ninja in general, and belongs elsewhere, if anywhere. The section “Ninja Gaiden Background” meanders all over the place and should probably just be removed. The section “Games” is okay, although maybe this should be renamed “Video game appearances” or something like that. “DOA3” is a term that many people outside fighting games will not understand. There are WAY too many pictures in this article, and almost none of them have an annotation to explain why they are important (probably because most of them cannot be justified thus). No. The pictures are fine. When reading an article it's good to have some visual material to help break up pace, while adding good background material.

This article feels too short and not informative enough on the character, considering Ryu Hayabusa was created for Ninja Gaiden around the time Super Mario Bros. 2 was released. He's had plenty of games since then, had a trilogy, many remakes, portable game, lived til the Xbox generation, made a bunch of cameos and still going strong into the next generation of consoles.
I mean you guys can add a whole bunch of more stuff, just look at all his traits, obsticles he's overcome, friends he's met and foes he's fought. He has a whole assorment of weapons and abilities. Just play the games, it's all right there. There are also game manuels, articles of interviews with Itagaki and stuff like that too. For example you guys can add a Trivia at the end of the article or something that says Hayabusa translate to Peregrine Falcon in Japanese. The Peregrine Falcon makes symbolic appearances in the Xbox Ninja Gaiden, first the Hayabusa clan's Animal Spirit that revives Ryu after he's injured or killed, next as a Statue of the Deity Raptor, at the end following Ryu as he teleports away, and then flying overhead into the moon after Ryu returns the Dragon Eye back to Kureha's grave.

Rayabusa age[edit]

The Master System game is non-canonical; it didn't have a storyline to it. The actual canon goes, I think it goes Ninja Gaiden Xbox, Ninja Gaiden 2 Xbox 360 (maybe; Helena might in NG2, and it could be after DOA), Ninja Gaiden Trilogy and the DOA series. I think, overall, that's 2 years. Ayane was 14 (I think) in NG on the Xbox, and 16 in DOA. Seriphyn 14:49, 11 June 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's been stated by Itagaki that the XBox games are their own storyline. Even Ryu's father is different. In the NES games he's called Ken, Dragon Sword on the DS calls his father "Joe Hyabusa". DOA3 ending[edit]

Ryu's ending in Dead or Alive 3 shows him catching an arrow and taking a note that was attached to it. Could this be the letter that he recieved from his father? I think it should be included in the article.

The letter is important, but we don't know what it says or who it's from yet. Perhaps DOA4 which is comming out in December, will reveal some answers.

Irene, Aileen[edit]

The Knowledge I know about Hayabusa Ryu, I share it with you.[edit]

About the age of Hayabusa Ryu – Yes, some people note he is 30 in the Ninja Ryukenden (NES-SNES) games and due to his rash personality in the 2D game he is of young age. Approximate age I give him here are his 18’s. Ninjas DO kick ass in an early age believe me. But let’s face it…under the laws of videogaming history no character really ages [Except for Heihashi Mishima in TEKKEN...I'll take that one back.] According to DOA [Dead or Alive] Hayabusa was born on the 15 of June 1978 so he is 28 now. (even though he is immortally ’23 years old’ in the DOA series and those tournaments are held once every year) They don’t mention where exactly was he born (mainly Japan, mainly his village Hayabusa no Sato) but in specifics, as a ninja, it’s a mystery. In Ninja Gaiden Xbox he is 20 because according to Itagaki, this Ninja Gaiden takes place 3 years after the first DOA tournament. So the timeline here is accurate if you play Ninja Gaiden and continue to DOA1 and so forth.

About the timeline! Most people don’t like to place the Ninja Ryukenden timeline with the Ninja Gaiden Xbox timeline. Well figures, they don’t match, therefore it’s a different adventure. Most likely a debate in timelines because of the character ‘Irene’ whom we see in Ninja Ryukenden but she is easily forgotten in DOA (although mentioned but never showed). I can give you a hint that I was debating myself over the past 4 years. Irene, the <only> love of Hayabusa. We can say that at the beginning of the Ninja Ryukenden Trilogy but alas her last mentioning was on DOA1. This clearly shows Hayabusa stayed with her for sometime. Starting the Curio Shop (that mind you, it’s in Manhattan New York where she lives) and living the quiet life. When the DOA tournament popped up and information about the sister of his best friend (that would be Kasumi and Hayate) disappearing gave Hayabusa an obligation that was more important than his new peaceful life AND it was an old promise to fulfill. [I’ll add it here: in the past Hayate mentioned about his sister to Hayabusa. Being friends and all Hayate felt en eerie wind blowing, he felt that his sister could get in trouble in the future so he asked Hayabusa if anything happened to him, to take care of his little sister, Hayabusa agreed and as friendship and honor he vowed to it.] the vow he took is more important as the code of the Ninja implies; this obviously enraged Irene because Hayabusa was facing danger once again. Hayabusa cannot and will not back away, of course this made a hard distance over the lovers and Irene disappeared AND I’ll tell you the WHY SHE disappeared and the small PROOF about it. NOTE: From DOA2 forward – Hayabusa is titled as ‘The Solitary Super Ninja’ [DOA2] or the ‘Singular Super Ninja’ [DOA4]. This clearly indicates that Hayabusa is no longer with her and now bound by the harshness of a ninja’s life he resides in Japan (making this theory go closer to the Ninja Gaiden Xbox story). This has also something to do with Itagaki, mentioning in one game interview (can’t remember if it was Gamespot of IGN or some other site/magazine), that he wanted Hayabusa to be the #1 sole Ninja…or something of the sort. Thus making him the sole survivor of the Hayabusa Ninja Clan and the sole ninja with super abilities in DOA. It could also go with the ninja code: “Shinobi must never marry, a love in their life will only hinder him/her in his/her role…”. Since Hayabusa is not the leader of the Hayabusa Clan therefore the laws apply to him in this case.

About Hayabusa’s Old man – Its KEN Hayabusa NOT ‘Joe Hayabusa’ for God’s sakes!! They placed Joe in the American Ninja Ryukenden because of the Sega Shinobi ‘Joe Musashi’ fandom. I still debate that was the reason, if someone thinks and has explicit info about this not being the case, note back. Others note that they changed the ‘Ken’ name due to CAPCOM’s Ken Masters from the Street Fighter series/sagas. I have the Japanese version of the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy (real name Ninja Ryukenden cause Americans CAN’T pronounce ‘Ryukenden') and I don’t read ‘Joe Hayabusa’ anywhere in the game. I read ‘Ken Hayabusa’. I’ll go into my game and take a screenshot when I can for this. Also, people go that he is dead. Well he “died” on Ninja Ryukenden and it’s later mentioned in the first short movie in Ninja Gaiden Xbox. He lives. I mean the - start quote ‘…he is never satisfied with the power he wields…” end quote, clearly shows he is alive and kicking. Also the ‘Talisman of Rebirth’ in Ninja Gaiden that revives you once you die might have worked on reviving one’s deceased dad. (Crude, I know…)

About the hair and those green eyes - Yes! The hair…in my DevianArt site [www.furan-san.deviantart.com] I’ve gotten mystery notes on the topic “Long Ponytail huh?” [you know who you are] and it’s about his hair. Sheesh, if 20 long years pass it means the hair grows. The ponytail was ALSO to move him aside to the very nasty similarity to the other Ryu (Street Fighter Ryu mind you). If you place the picture of Hayabusa from Ninja Ryukenden next to Ryu from Street Fighter, they are TWINS. The ponytail was a good thing…I like it. About the eyes. From Brown to Emerald Green throughout four games is very weird. Well, there are a few answers for that – including the contacts joke – ONE: He is from a legendary clan of Dragons. The lineage must have awakened him during the young age into maturity and BINGO you get gorgeous green eyes…. There is a story about green eyed warriors in ancient times. I cannot really tell if it’s ancient Chinese of Japanese mythology (but it goes into the mythical East), but I’ve read about it and they have to do with people and dragons (also D&D has a thing with this stuff). It was said that those born with green eyes where the children of the gods. Embodiments of divinities in human newborns. Those who had these stunning eyes where children of destiny. It was also said, green eyes are eyes of wise dragons. The changing from normal brown to green is also a sign that the power has finally awakened. TWO: Hayabusa’s mother (whom is never mentioned or showed) may not be Japanese and thus had green eyes or a family member on her side has someone with green eyes and the genetics are passed. THREE: Hayabusa got tired of the crummy brown (he can’t see well anymore) and thus hides it with the colored contact lenses. I have no more arguments on this topic.

I’ll rant no more…I think those are the main FAQ’s of this character. I’ll shut up now.

This would be good to add to Hayabusa's page but, as much as it annoys me, you'll need a source of some kind. I think. On the subject of time, I do think Ninja Gaiden Xbox is 2 years before DOA as, in the manual, Ayane is said to be 14. Perhaps the original Ninja Ryukenden games took place in the 2 year gap? It's been suggested that the XBox Ninja Gaiden game exists in its own continuity, outside of that presented in the original trilogy (something fairly common in Japanese franchises). I remember reading an interview where Itagaki intended for the Xbox version to take place in a seperate universe from the original NES, because he felt the storyline would have blocked his room for creativity. Although fans suggested that they could fit together in one timeline if the Xbox version happenned first, then the NES trilogy, then Dead or Alive. Considering he linked Ninja Gaiden to Dead Or Alive by throwing Ayane (DOA character) into Ninja Gaiden (Xbox), and the original Dead or Alive linked Ryu Hayabusa to the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy (NES), by stating in the instruction manuel that Ryu's love was Aileen/Irene from the NES series. Sexuality Theories[edit]

I've deleted this part because even though some people may believe Hayabusa is homosexual, it is highly unlikely seeing as the Wiki already states that he has a love called Irene

I believe I was first do delete that ricdiculous section. Not that I have anything thing aganist homosexuality, it just that theres nothing solid to say otherwise. Irene is also in Ninja Gaiden 3, mentioned in DOA's instruction manuel as Aileen (they're the same characters in Japanese Katakana, just translated into english differently), and she's also in the Ninja Gaiden anime, which can been seen on YouTube.

The only reason someone could ever get the thought that he's homosexual was because at the end of Ninja Gaiden (Xbox), he teleported away from Rachel, who happens to be big breasted and dressed in revealing dominatrix like attire. Although you can tell she wanted him.
There are also other explainations too
A) he was beyond lustful sex, being a Ninja with supernatural abilities
B) he didn't have feelings for her, may have had feelings for Kureha or not
C) his mission was done, and he had avenged his clan and brought back it's honor by retrieving and destroying the blade they were suppose to guard, that's why he said it was over teleported to their graves and that's why he was so obsessed with his mission.
D) although heterosexual, he was the kind of male character that didn't really care for sex, kind of like Agent Fox Mulder from the X Files.

Chronological Order?[edit]

The article currently lists DOA info first, then has a section on Ninja Gaiden. Seeing as how the Ninja Gaiden series predates DOA by nearly 10 years, shouldn't Ninja Gaiden be listed first? I agree, the article, puts too much emphasis on the Dead or Alive series, in which Ryu is just one of the combatants with his side story along with the other characters. Where as in Ninja Gaiden, Ryu Hayabusa is the main character and protagonist, and the game revolves around him. And NG does have more plot element and storylines, it was the first game to use cinematics to tell stories, although they were quite cheesy. Although you have to keep in mind, DOA is an easy game anyone can play and beat by just button mashing, Ninja Gaiden (all of them) however are one of the most differcult games ever, requiring a lot of patience and skill, so not many people got to progress through them. -Julu Snp 23:18, 28 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Infobox image[edit]

We start the discussion here. The image at the top, I believe, must reflect on Ryu's general appearance in all games. The promotional art from Dead or Alive 5 is not only current, but it does a good job at demonstrating this overall "big picture". February 2016[edit]

After sixteen days, I've finished my renovation of the article. (For whatever reason, I've been on a ridiculous Dead or Alive kick lately.) My damage: a ton of fancruft was removed while trying to keep the gist of the storylines intact, unnecessary Halo 3 image axed, other-media and design/gameplay sections were beefed up as much as I could (finding character-specific interviews before 2008 is next to impossible), and added ten citations while filling out existing ones. Phew. Probably still not GA-quality, but I think it came out fairly well. sixtynine • speak up • 03:30, 1 March 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Famicom Ninja Gaiden 3 cover[edit]

The cover art shows a design of Ryu different from the design of the character in the images currently present in the article as of this time.
