Untitled[edit]

The first version of this page made it explicit that Dunk was indeed knighted by Ser Arlan of Pennytree. However, their story is deliberately unclear on that issue, and some readers believe that it is an essential feature of the story that Dunk was never formally knighted, yet keeps the knightly vows better than the all the anointed Sers. Thus I changed the summary to be equally unclear about the issue.

There are several indications that Dunk was not knighted by Ser Arlan. When Dunk first meets Egg he doesn't know how to introduce himself. He doesn't know if he should call himself Dunk or add "of Penny tree" or "of Kingslanding". If he had been knighted he would know what title it had been done under. Later, when he relates the tale of his knighting, he is glad the lights are dim as he fears his ears are red and burning. When he is in the cell, he thinks of how he and Aegon are the same, both telling a monstrous lie because of how badly they wanted something. And Dunk won't knight the squire, because only a knight can do so, and he is relieved when the Laughing Storm takes the task from him.

Sworn Sword treated on this page[edit]

The SoIaF template refers to a separate Sworn Sword page, but that one never appeared. I will update the template. The individual novellas don't seem to warrant separate articles.

Date[edit]

The article says several times that The Hedge Knight takes place in 208 AL. The novella has no date in it. However, in the graphic novel (checked and okayed by George RR Martin) it is explicity stated that the tourney takes place in 209, up to several months before the Great Spring Sickness kills King Daeron, Valarr and Matarys. I have altered it accordingly.--Werthead 18:59, 10 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
