political leanings of the commissioners[edit]

I think it would be useful if we could somehow list the political leanings of each of the commissioners from both the past and the present. This would be a summary that is unlikely to be present in any other references. We already do this very subtly (with colours) in the article President of the European Commission. Very subtle but I like the idea. The best place to do this is proberbly on each commission page such as Barroso Commission. This page (European Commission) needs links to the various commission pages too (do we still need to keep the current members on this page?). Final point - we should add a key! Ok - at the risk of talking to myself I would like to know peoples oppinions of the general plan to colour lists of members of commissions by supposed political leanings. Is this a good thing and should it be used for the pages of previous commissions?

There are also one or two points about the current assignments on this page. I decided what colour to assign based on the party linked from the page of the commissioners. In one or two cases no party was listed and there I have tried to work it out based on "was in so-and-so's govn't" and seeing what party so-and-so was in. Sometimes this did not help and I have left the row white. Those in the know could help by filling in the blanks.... Andreww 10:07, 3 May 2005 (UTC)[reply]

Barroso blue[edit]

Is there a reason why Barroso is blue? I understand he came from the socialist party of Portugal (PSD). If Peter Mandleson is red despite the Labour party of the UK being not remotely social democratic these days, then why would Barroso be a conservative? According to Social Democratic Party (Portugal): "The party's name can be misleading: it is a party of the centre-right, and does not advocate social democracy in any usual sense of the term. The party's delegates to the European Parliament have, since the late 1990s, sat with the European People's Party, along with the Conservative and Christian Democratic parties of many European countries." Photos[edit]

Wouldn't it be better if the photographs of the Commissioners are merged with the table containing information about them, in a new column, probably decreasing their sizes? EG 19:22, 3 April 2007 (UTC)[reply]

I agree, a small thumbnail-photo of the respective commissioner would be a great improvement for the table. However, I'm still a little bugged by the state-column. I don't really mind calling the member-states "states", but to some it might reassamble the notion that they are actual sub-national states instead of independent counries - even more so when using the national ensign instead of the flag. Danuta Hübner[edit]

Danuta was a Commissioner for the most of the Commission, but was not listed anywhere in the article except in the transclusion table. Such things should be rectified: reshuffle should be noted properly in the text. – Kaihsu (talk) 13:31, 6 July 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Flags vs CoAs[edit]

I've been thinking about this for some time and although I went with it before and it looks good, I really think we should change the coat of arms in the list to flags. The only logical reason for them would be to represent governments rather than countries, but I don't think that comes across or is worth it to be honest, flags are used for that elsewhere perfectly fine. The image there should help to identify the country quickly and CoAs don't, they are unrecognisable and are not that rememberable either. If no one objects, I think I'll switch round usage of CoAs on the Commission lists to flags. Might not look as good but it is somewhat more useful. Previous criminal activities column[edit]

A number of the Commissioners either have criminal convictions or have been widely discussed as having links to organised crime or to state terror apparatus during the communist era, or both.
