In reaction, though belated, to Bilbo's purge of university professors the following wording was added to the State Constitution: Such board shall have the power and authority to elect the heads of the various institutions of higher learning, and contract with all deans, professors and other members of the teaching staff, and all administrative employees of said institutions for a term not exceeding four (4) years; but said board shall have the power and authority to terminate any such contract at any time for malfeasance, inefficiency or contumacious conduct, but never for political reasons.

White Supremacy?[edit]

He supported Leroy Percy and paid a heavey price because of it. Seems inconsistent with the WS label. Those were nasty times so supporting Percy took some courage. He may have been risking his life. IMO calling him a white supremacist is simplistic. Geo8rge (talk) 02:53, 13 December 2008 (UTC)[reply]

Bilbo wrote to Gen. MacArthur that all Japanese should be "sterilized" under the American occupation. He was a racist of embarrassing proportions.50.111.51.247 (talk) 16:13, 19 March 2021 (UTC)[reply]

I think it was just a tactical move in state politics; he was certainly a member of the Klan.

As for the label of 'white supremacist' being simplistic - well, the link to his book 'Take Your Choice' is in the article. He wrote it at the end of his life, as a defence and celebration of what he believed on the race question. Read the book all the way through, and see what you think.

It is true that he met with black leaders sometimes, including Leon Louis at the end of his life. He seems to have had a sincere belief that the races were better apart and thought that blacks of good will would feel the same. Some, like Garvey, seem to have done.

Next time I am in Jackson, MS, I will try to get a picture of his statue and add it to the article. With and without coats (g). 76.2.155.181 (talk) 05:56, 13 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

The link to the book has disappeared. Suggest it be put back, to give researchers access to the subject’s views. 96.90.200.185 (talk) 17:58, 28 August 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Firing the Professors[edit]

Why?

Saying it was due to 'political considerations' is rather skimpy. Some background on this dramatic move, which made national headlines, would improve the article. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 173.13.153.50 (talk) 00:46, 3 October 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Good detail addition to the professors flap, but still no info as to why? 86.148.55.210 (talk) 10:17, 18 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Law Practice[edit]

'In 1908, he was admitted to the bar in Tennessee and began a law practice in Poplarville, Mississippi.'

Can you practice law in MS without being a member of the Bar in that state?? —Preceding unsigned comment added by 95.146.138.235 (talk) 00:51, 3 September 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Regarding the uncited claim that Andy Duncan had written a short story entitled "Senator Bilbo," I can verify that the story, copyright 2001, was published in the anthology "Seekers of Dreams" edited by Douglas Anderson. Date of publication 2005, ISBN 1-59360-048-8, Library of Congress Control 32005925489.

My apologies for not signing the above edit. Genshed (talk) 19:04, 28 April 2011 (UTC)[reply]
