New image project[edit]

Hi. This little form letter is just a courtesy notice to let you know that a proposal to merge the projects Wikipedia:WikiProject Free images, Wikipedia:WikiProject Fair use, Wikipedia:WikiProject Moving free images to Wikimedia Commons and Wikipedia:WikiProject Illustration into the newly formed Wikipedia:WikiProject Images and Media has met with general support at Wikipedia:WikiProject Council/Proposals/Files. Since you're on the rosters of membership in at least one of those projects, I thought you might be interested. Conversation about redirecting those projects is located here. Please participate in that discussion if you have any interest, and if you still have interest in achieving the goals of the original project, we'd love to have you join in. If you aren't interested in either the conversation or the project, please pardon the interruption. :) Thanks. Moonriddengirl (talk) 13:51, 23 April 2009 (UTC)[reply]

PROD warning[edit]

Proposed deletion of Grandma Gatewood[edit]

A proposed deletion template has been added to the article Grandma Gatewood, suggesting that it be deleted according to the proposed deletion process because of the following concern:

Does not conform to standard of notability, i.e. person known only for one event. See WP:BIO1E and WP:BLP1E

All contributions are appreciated, but this article may not satisfy Wikipedia's criteria for inclusion, and the deletion notice should explain why (see also "What Wikipedia is not" and Wikipedia's deletion policy). You may prevent the proposed deletion by removing the {{dated prod}} notice, but please explain why you disagree with the proposed deletion in your edit summary or on its talk page.

Please consider improving the article to address the issues raised because, even though removing the deletion notice will prevent deletion through the proposed deletion process, the article may still be deleted if it matches any of the speedy deletion criteria or it can be sent to Articles for Deletion, where it may be deleted if consensus to delete is reached. Age Happens (talk) 05:12, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I think it is fine as is, removed the prod, and commented why at Talk:Grandma Gatewood. doncram (talk) 05:45, 8 May 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Nice photos! I'm both impressed by, and envious of, your skill(s).

Re Oddfellows: I share your POV. I just haven't been able to think of an expression that captures the idea better than "the people in power" captures it. (I wish I could!!) It's about Power. The "elites" doesn't capture it - these people really couldn't care less about elitism. The "puppetmasters" is a bit obscure, and I'm not suggesting it, but it does capture it better than either "government" or "elites".
I'm not really happy with either "the establishment" or "the established", but it's the best I can come up with at the moment.
I will quickly and happily accept an expression that captures the essence of "the people in power".
What do you think of "the powerful"? (I'm not sold on that one, either, but if we're grasping at straws ... )

P.S. Happy New Year!

Thanks for your very nice note Mwanner. I do not have it on my watch list, but do try to look at that article every so often, and over the last 3 years I have done quite a lot of work on it, one way or the other. Three years ago it was totally a horrible mess, but the article has not yet ever been in really great shape. It is hard to find good reliable sources for the information, and plus the article has a history of getting radically changed and/or tinkered with fairly often by new editors, frequently in ways that are not constructive. It is tiresome to keep trying to fix it up in order to make it look decent, especially trying to get it to read well, but I do what I can when I am in the mood to tackle it. I wish a few more people who are really knowledgeable would take an interest in it. I may copy some of your comments onto the talk page, as I am not sure I can face working on it just right now, as I am rather tired. As for the possible plagiarized info, is there any chance that you can just revert that whole edit? Best, Invertzoo (talk) 21:46, 2 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

Hi again, As it happens, and despite what I said, I did end up doing a lot of work over the last few hours, attempting to removing many of the duplications, and trying to streamline the article a bit. I changed the order of some of the sections and made subheadings. I hope it is an improvement. Best wishes, Invertzoo (talk) 00:48, 3 August 2010 (UTC)[reply]

File source problem with File:GeorgePerkins.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:GeorgePerkins.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the website from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of that website's terms of use of its content. However, if the copyright holder is a party unaffiliated from the website's publisher, that copyright should also be acknowledged.

If you have uploaded other files, consider verifying that you have specified sources for those files as well. You can find a list of files you have created in your upload log. Hello there.

I have a copy of The Adventures of Wonk, as you report it is fragile in that the spine has broken so that the front cover is loose but otherwise the pages themselves are in pretty good condition. The book was published in 1945 with a second edition in 1946. If you'd like info about the book let me know. Could it be valuable? It was a pleasure to find someone else out there who knows about this book, a much treasured childhood memory for me.

Rewrite some text?[edit]

Hi Mwanner, you helped me a while back by rewriting some text on Daytona Beach Golf Course. I am in a similar dilemma now - I need some text on Jackie Robinson Ballpark rewritten to place on the Daytona Cubs page. I wonder if I can recruit you handle this task? I am a bit "too close" to the project to think clearly right now. The Ballpark belongs to the City of Daytona Beach, so their text is primary. I can tell that the Daytona Cubs copied their text from the City's web site - its very similar, but not exactly the same. Can you take a look?

New York Adirondack Park map[edit]

New York state and its counties

You think the New York state map I put on pages is plain? It shows county borders. It makes more sense to show places in relation to county borders than not. The Adirondack Park is nice but does not have the county borders. That is the only reason I removed the map from so many pages in Clinton, Lewis, Franklin, Essex, and Hamilton Counties. The Adirondack map does not have borders so it is impossible to tell any relationship other than at the state level. Plus, at least one place (in Onondaga County was far outside of the park boundaries. I believe there may be others like that. What makes you think the other New York state map is plain, and this one is good? Please explain in detail. NewYorkeruser (talk) 02:20, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

New York state with counties and Adirondack Park

How about having both the regular New York state map (the one with county borders that I like) and the Adirondack Park map for communities and towns within the park boundaries? Leave the Adirondack Park map out of all other pages as it would be irrevelent. NewYorkeruser (talk) 02:29, 28 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I can try to add the park to the New York map I made showing counties. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 00:59, 30 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I switched the map above for the new one with the Adirondack Park shown in green. This took me about an hour, adding rivers would be even more work, so hope this suffices. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 02:41, 30 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I am pretty low-tech - I resized the other map and then traced the park outline by hand then colored it (switched color twice too, which took longer). Unfortunately I am not able to do svg files - I've tried and it just does not work out. The Graphics Lab can do the conversion though. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:26, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
PS The new map is the same size and latitude and longitude as the other map, so it can be easily calibrated for use in geobox or other such automatic dot infoboxes - that is pretty easy to do if you want me to, just let me know. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 01:32, 31 October 2011 (UTC)[reply]
I made Template:Geobox locator New York Adirondack for using this map in Geoboxes. Ruhrfisch ><>°° 12:34, 6 November 2011 (UTC)[reply]

Serendipity talk page[edit]

Are you the photographer behind the fine image on the right? It has become a topic of discussion at the Wikipedia talk page for "Serendipity".

The image is being used as an example of a "happy accident", and I was wondering if you could confirm there (or here) the details described by the caption in the Wikipedia article. The caption reads:
"The photographer's objective was a perched Black-crowned Night Heron; the artist later discovered that the image serendipitously included the less seen Pileated Woodpecker"

Is that true? Ideally we would add that to the image's description, given its current use.

Non-free rationale for File:ReserveAmerica.jpg[edit]

Thanks for uploading or contributing to File:ReserveAmerica.jpg. I notice the file page specifies that the file is being used under non-free content criteria, but there is not a suitable explanation or rationale as to why each specific use in Wikipedia is acceptable. Please go to the file description page, and edit it to include a non-free rationale.

If you have uploaded other non-free media, consider checking that you have specified the non-free rationale on those pages too. You can find a list of 'file' pages you have edited by clicking on the "my contributions" link (it is located at the very top of any Wikipedia page when you are logged in), and then selecting "File" from the dropdown box. Note that any non-free media lacking such an explanation will be deleted one week after they have been tagged, as described on criteria for speedy deletion. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem. If you have any questions, please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. More info on Hotchkiss gun?[edit]

Hi, I see you are a contributor to the article about the Hotchkiss gun, am I reading the history of that article correctly?

I'm looking for more detail about the use of that weapon in the Indian Wars from 1877 to 1890. The article says it was used in the 1877 Nez Perce War, and in 1890 at the Wounded Knee massacre.

I am specifically interested in where, when and against which tribes the gun was used during the time between 1877 and 1890.

I am inexperienced at navigating article histories, and uncertain as to how I can learn who contributed that part of the article, so I can ask for more background or references. You're my best bet so far!

If you have any guidance, I'd be most grateful.

Thank you.

A tag has been placed on File:Jackson-Stonewall-LOC.jpg requesting that it be speedily deleted from Wikipedia. This has been done under section F2 of the criteria for speedy deletion, because it is an image page for a missing or corrupt image or an empty image description page for a Commons-hosted image.

If you think this page should not be deleted for this reason, you may contest the nomination by visiting the page and clicking the button labelled "Click here to contest this speedy deletion". This will give you the opportunity to explain why you believe the page should not be deleted. However, be aware that once a page is tagged for speedy deletion, it may be removed without delay. Please do not remove the speedy deletion tag from the page yourself, but do not hesitate to add information in line with Wikipedia's policies and guidelines. Such links are almost always unintended, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of "Did you mean..." article titles. Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.

File source problem with File:ThomasShippAbramSmith.jpg[edit]

Thank you for uploading File:ThomasShippAbramSmith.jpg. I noticed that the file's description page currently doesn't specify who created the content, so the copyright status is unclear. If you did not create this file yourself, you will need to specify the owner of the copyright. If you obtained it from a website, please add a link to the page from which it was taken, together with a brief restatement of the website's terms of use of its content. If the original copyright holder is a party unaffiliated with the website, that author should also be credited. Please add this information by editing the image description page.

If the necessary information is not added within the next days, the image will be deleted. If the file is already gone, you can still make a request for undeletion and ask for a chance to fix the problem.

Please refer to the image use policy to learn what images you can or cannot upload on Wikipedia. Please also check any other files you have uploaded to make sure they are correctly tagged. Here is a list of your uploads. If you have any questions or are in need of assistance please ask them at the Media copyright questions page. Thank you. Disambiguation link notification for January 21[edit]

Hi. Thank you for your recent edits. An automated process has detected that when you recently edited Inez Milholland, you added links pointing to the disambiguation pages Lewis, New York and Women's March (check to confirm | fix with Dab solver). Such links are usually incorrect, since a disambiguation page is merely a list of unrelated topics with similar titles. (Read the FAQ • Join us at the DPL WikiProject.)

McKenzie Mountain elevation[edit]

Looking at McKenzie Mountain article edit history it seems to me that you have added elevation information for this mountain back in 2008 - see [2]. If so, do you remember source of this information? I see that OpenStreetMap has it at 1165 m (or 3822 ft), while Peakbagger.com currently shows 3832 ft referring to NAVD88 model. Hence, I wonder about the discrepancy. IAmKrzys (talk) 11:56, 8 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

I seem to have gotten it from the source listed: Adirondack Trails, High Peaks Region (Tony Goodwin, ed.) p. 169 lists the elevation as 3861. AllTrails.com has it at 3861, as does www.adkhighpeaks.com, www.summitpost.org and several others. But you're right, quite a few sites list 3822, and some list it at 3832... puzzling. -- Mwanner | Talk 00:49, 9 July 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Better source request for File:MarcusWhitman.jpg[edit]

Thanks for your upload to Wikipedia:

You provided a source, but it is difficult for other users to examine the copyright status of the image because the source is incomplete. Please consider clarifying the exact source so that the copyright status may be checked more easily. It is best to specify the exact Web page where you found the image, rather than only giving the source domain, search engine, pinboard, aggregator, or the URL of the image file itself. Please update the image description with a URL that will be more helpful to other users in determining the copyright status.

If you have uploaded other files, consider checking that you have specified their source in a complete manner. You can find a list of files you have uploaded by following this link. If you have any questions please ask them at the Media copyright questions page or me at my talk page. Thank you. ShakespeareFan00 (talk) 16:00, 28 October 2018 (UTC)[reply]

Island Names[edit]

Do you know the exact name of these islands?

and

Thanks.

Bacardi379 (talk) 21:37, 11 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

  • The first one, on Middle Saranac, I'm afraid I have no idea what the name is or even which island it is. The second one, though, I know exactly where it is on Lower Saranac, though it's one of a group of three or four and I'm not sure which one, though it doesn't matter much because I believe they are known collectively as the Three Sisters (sometimes Four Sisters-- the last one is really tiny.) They are immediately north of Eagle Island, a 64-acre island in the northern part of the lake. The sisters are all quite small, 200 feet long and less than 50 feet wide. The photo was shot from the west side of the island looking very slightly north of due east. You should be able to see them by following this link.

Hope this helps! Mwanner | Talk 01:43, 12 January 2019 (UTC)[reply]

Stony Creek Ponds moved to draftspace[edit]

An article you recently created, Stony Creek Ponds, is not suitable as written to remain published. In 2023, we can't have articlees with zero source in main space. It needs more citations from reliable, independent sources. (?) Information that can't be referenced should be removed (verifiability is of central importance on Wikipedia). I've moved your draft to draftspace (with a prefix of "Draft:" before the article title) where you can incubate the article with minimal disruption. When you feel the article is ready for mainspace, please click on the "Submit your draft for review!" button at the top of the page. Maliner (talk) 16:38, 18 September 2023 (UTC)[reply]
