Roads in Troms county are not poorly maintained. Quite the contrary in fact. All roads have asphalt and are kept open 24/7 throughout the year. Whoever wrote the piece on Troms is poorly informed.

"Because many of the roads are poorly maintained, much communication is done by boat and air services." - Well, some communication is done by boat, travelling between the three biggest towns especially. This is because it's faster than driving, not because of poorly maintained roads... Airservices exists (Harstad-Tromsø and Nordreisa-Tromsø), but it is not a very popular way of communication. People would rather drive on our "poorly maintained roads" :)

Agree, the section about poorly maintained roads is strange, that was the case in the past, not now. Might be written by someone visiting Troms back then? I want to remove that sentence. Orcaborealis 09:01, 25 November 2005 (UTC)[reply]

As far as I know, there is no official number of Sami people in Troms, except for samemanntallet (the Sami census), which is self-selected and therefore probably gives a much smaller number than what is real. - Soulkeeper (talk) 15:33, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Demonym[edit]

Not sure if "tromsværing" is good. The demonym is very easily confused with tromsøværing, and not used much, if at all. I have heard "tromsing", but that is not used much either, probably because it's so close to "tomsing" (nitwit) that people don't want to use the word about themselves. Actually I don't think there exists a generally accepted, widespread demonym for people from Troms. "Nordlending" is used as a common demonym for all people from Nordland, Troms and Finnmark (although Finnmark has its own demonym, finnmarking), but on the other hand, Nordlending can also be considered to primarily refer to people from Nordland... Another point about "tromsværing": A vær is a fishing village. Tromsø used to be one, so calling someone from Tromsø a "-væring" is appropriate. Troms, on the other hand, is a county, and has never been a vær. As the demonym statement is unsourced, I will remove it from the article. - Soulkeeper (talk) 16:01, 25 August 2014 (UTC)[reply]

Interesting. I looked it up in the etymologic dictionary Våre arveord, and it does indeed seem like -væring is related to the demonym suffix "-vær", not the village suffix "-vær". However, I found this snippet from Maal og Minne, that suggests that the suffix "-væring" is only used for people coming from places that end with a vocal. (*angsværing flies in the face of that, though...) Oh well, I give up for now.
