Page needs work[edit]

This page has some positive elements but important information, like population, area of the municipality, education, etc. are missing. I will try to improve the article in the next few days. I think I have improved the article a bit. The place sounds impressive. I frankly had no idea how much it had grown and become such an economic powerhouse. I remember it from the seventies when it was starting to grow and had around 100,000 people. Vogensen 22:07, 5 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

I agree with you, this page definitely needs work. Please don't get me wrong: the information itself is ok, but the way is written sounds like a piece of propaganda from the city mayor's office. Yes, the city is growing very very fast. 100,000 in 70´s and now 600,000 people. More than a half, maybe a third of population was not born in there. About the wiki, info is ok, but style is unnecessary "propagandistic". It was very fun to read, it appears the writer is trying hard to convince, when there is not appropriate to write this way. Unfortunately, I cannot help by writing something better. Hope someone can!

Origins of the name[edit]

I'm not sure the name Uberlândia comes from the german über, are you sure that source is accurate? I was born and raised in the city, and in the school they always taught that the name came from latin language, meaning "fertile land". Cpt Vidal (talk) 01:17, 10 February 2011 (UTC)[reply]

I believe the etymology given on the text of the article has to be some bad-taste joke. The source indicated is laughably non-reliable and the hypothesis that the city's name comes from Latin uber (fruitful, productive, rich) - see here: http://en.wiktionary.org/wiki/uber - sounds considerably more logic, especially considering the place is not part of the German-colonized regions of Brazil.

According to the Portuguese wikipedia article, the City started in the 19th century as San Pedro de Uberabinha ("Little Uberaba"), a subdivision of the city of Uberaba, Uberaba being a indigenous Tupi word (Y-beraba) meaning "Clear (or bright) water" and the name of the (then) lager town and river 100 km away. The city was renamed Uberlândia in 1929.[1] There doesn't seem to be a connection to German "über"... -- megA (talk) 15:52, 12 July 2011 (UTC)[reply]

If Uberlandia was of Latin origin, then it should have been Terra Uber, or Terra Ubera. However, there is a popular concept of uberland as an area of Austria, Romania and Hungary. Area total[edit]

Can it be possible that the area total of Uberlandia (4,115.9 km2 and 1,589.2 sq mi) is much bigger than this one of much bigger towns like Belo Horizonte (biggest town in Minas Gerais), New York City (USA), London (England) or Berlin (Germany)? It sounds impossible that a Brazilian town of about 600.000 inhabitants can have a much bigger area than square miles gigants like London or Berlin. The area given is that of the 'municipio' (roughly equivalent to country in the US). The urban area of Uberlândia is much smaller estimated at 160.66 km2 in 2010. AmigaClone (talk) 09:43, 31 July 2021 (UTC)[reply]
