Under "Harlem," is the name "Strivers Row" really defunct? The name is used to refer to the elegant strip of brownstones and clubs along Frederick Douglass Boulevard (universally called Eighth Avenue) around the 140s (probably from 135 St. to the low 150s) where the Harlem politicos and intelligentsia live. I won't delete "defunct" immediately, but will wait for a discussion on this point.
It would be a good thing if somebody can find or create a map of Manhattan's neighborhood, mainly famous one such as the Lower east Side, Greenwich Village ?--Revas 8 July 2005 17:56 (UTC)

good job reorganising the page! Where did you get the list from? I have attempted a map from an old 1920 map of Manhattan using the information on the neighborhood articles. wasn't sure how best to show so many overlapping neighborhoods so I did them as outlines. please forgive any mistakes as the notion of neighborhoods is very inexact, and having been there only once my knowledge of NYC is not so great. --Astrokey44 22:01, 28 November 2006 (UTC)[reply]

It's great how the neighborhoods are listed from north to south. Last time I saw this page they were listed alphabetically, which confused me somewhat - it's not the way I usually think of neighborhoods; sort of like asking someone to list the months of the year alphabetically. - Matthew238 07:53, 8 January 2006 (UTC)[reply]

"Little Germany," or "Kleindeutschland," as it was known by locals at the time, occupied much of what is now considered the East Village/Alphabet City and the Lower East Side (Avenue B was nicknamed "German Broadway"). There is a map of Manhattan neighborhoods at http://www.zetashapes.com, but it doesn't match the descriptions here. Do you think we should edit it to make it match?

In case anyone hadn't noticed, Wikipedia:Communities strawpoll is voting on a uniform naming convention for all neighborhoods of U.S. cities. The proposition currently leading by a wide margin would apparently entail renaming most New York City neighborhood articles to something like neighborhood, New York, New York. older ≠ wiser 19:02, 23 August 2006 (UTC)[reply]
I wasn't involved in this (now inactive) strawpoll, but from what I read, I think it refers to actual neighborhoods, and not a general list of neighborhoods.
That said, my opinion is that this article as named ("List of Manhattan neighborhoods") is extremely difficult to find, even impossible for actual people (perhaps unfamiliar to Wikipedia) just looking for a list of Manhattan neighborhoods.
I would prefer a name as simple and intuitive as possible, perhaps Manhattan neighborhoods. However, the current name is acceptable as long as the necessary redirects exist.
I'm confused (and perhaps a history lesson is in order). On the map of the Manhattan neighborhoods, Little Italy shown to be downtown, inside the area marked as Chinatown. However, on the base map ("Chief Points of Interest in Upper/Lower Manhattan") there is a "Little Italy" label inside the area now marked as "Spanish Harlem." Why the discrepency?

Look at the Spanish Harlem Article. It says, "It was formerly known as Italian Harlem, and still harbors a small Italian American population." The base map is from 1920. --ChrisRuvolo (t) 17:57, 2 February 2007 (UTC)[reply]
While I am no expert, I live in "Little Constance" but have never heard of my street being called that. A message board of locals also has not heard of that name. And a further search of the Web for LC only turns up sites that cite a now-removed Wikipedia quote "lately became known as little constance". I propose removal of that neighborhood from the list. (The term "Little Constance" was added in the 04:44, 28 November 2006 version.)

I think the made-up neighborhood issue is problematic for this article. Also, I think it's important keep in mind what a neighborhood is when adding information. There have been entries which state that a street (Korea Way in Korea Town) or stand alone building (Ansonia) is a neighborhood when a bit of research will show that they are not. Wikipedia is not a place to try and promote a new neighborhood name either, as was the case with "Little Constance" and "Hudson". If these areas in question are or have become neighborhoods, then some references would be great when including the information.Eatabullet (talk) 03:32, 14 October 2008 (UTC)[reply]
Why does the map of Manhattan end with Harlem? Well obviously it should be removed until it's edited enough to come back. I still agree with replacing the image with a font that's easier to read. Back to the drawing board on mine though. I have errors to correct, like Koreatown.
Can you tell me what the other errors are though? Besides spelling errors and left out words. Those I've corrected. The Ansonia is *not* a neighborhood and neither is Cooperative Village. Five Points doesn't exist anymore. Tenderloin is no longer a red light district. Little Germany is no longer predominately German. All of these neighborhoods on this wiki are referred to in the past tense.
Those neighborhoods were clearly marked as historical, and by removing them you have decreased the value of the map. I am restoring the original map. Do not edit war to put your inerior version back in. Beyond My Ken (talk) 21:10, 19 February 2012 (UTC)[reply]
I did not remove them, and they were not 'clearly marked' on the original map. What I did was make it more obvious that they were historical, and I noted that a couple of the marked areas were landmarks, not neighborhoods. In these regards, the original was inferior (not for the historical neighborhoods, but for the landmarks). I have no intention of getting into an edit war with you. You seem to be much, much more hostile than you need to be for this situation, and I take offense to the patronizing, holier-than-thou tone you're using. I suggest a completely new version of the neighborhood map. The file as it exists now (and in the updated version noted above) has a number of major issues that should be addressed:
The map only extends to 145th (?) Street, leaving out all of Washington Heights and Inwood.
The background map adds confusion by being outdated.
The definition of a neighborhood is, as has been noted, inconsistent.
Perhaps stemming from the last point, the map is especially confusing From Midtown south.
The font is bad.

There is no set definition of neighborhood boundaries in New York City. The city doesn't set them, they're up for grabs and are determined basically by usage. We could easily get an up-to-date copyleft map from openstreetmap and the like. There are some lands that are not present in the current ancient map we are using. As others have pointed out, Manhattan neighborhoods do not end at 145th st. It expands upwards into Washington Heights, Inwood and, yes, Marble Hill. How about y'all own up to this and actually fix this. Yes Manhattan Island now ends at Inwood, BUT, Manhattan borough (as in New York County) has Marble Hill in it.
