Photo[edit]

Please remove the photo, it makes more of a political statement than an educational one, besides not only had this man's family had to watch the whole world is now watching him. Give him some respect the people that murdered him didn't.

Dillinger[edit]

The link to dillinger should probably be taken out. The only possible relevance this could have to him is the widespread myth that he did have a death erection. He didn't have a large penis and he didn't have a death erection. If you had seen the picture you would know that since the picture is of him laying on his back the blood could not have pooled and he couldn't have had one. The large bulge was just somebodies arm under the sheet.Firebomb Fritz 17:26, 29 December 2006 (UTC)[reply]

1[edit]

Please remove the Photo of the Iraqi victim from the "LIVELEAK" site which was formerly ogrish.com.

Here is why:

I have no problem with nudity or erections being available. My problem is with the liveleak site as the link in this case.

Most users who search for "Erection" in Google (in which the death erection link is #2 result) are children and teenagers both boys and girls. So having followed the link to the Liveleak site, they would have access to all the unpleasant and banned videos within the site.

Now, a formative teen or child who simply wants biological or personal information about growing up will regrattably stumble upon something even adults can't handle - and there is no blocking access or warning. It is unreasonable to expect the child to stop his own curiosity once inside the site.

I know the site could be found elsewhere by searches etc. but it is wrong to have an established and reputable network as Wikipedia associated with Liveleak in this case, which is trusted by youngsters for good safe information. "Erection", "Puberty" "Ejaculation" are all very very common searches for the most impressionable demographic.

I just want the Liveleak link removed. Use another photo or put the photo without the comments with a different link.

Thank you

Where have the pictures gone?[edit]

An image of a death erection? My God.
Actually this short article could easily be condensed - the thing about the high pressure in the lower part of body causing the "erectile tissue blood" to enter the penis could be said in two lines rather than seven. Palefire 01:30, Dec 23, 2004 (UTC)

Requested " Death Erection" photos[edit]

I read the request on the " Talk:Death erection" page for more images of " Death Erections ". As requested, I have added 2 more photos depicting this phenomenon.

Do you have versions of these images without text on them - text may be included on the image description page. Also, do you have a source for these images to add to the image description page. --Oldak Quill 15:23, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)

2[edit]

Do we really need three images to illustrate this article? I suggest selecting and using the least sensationalist image from these three. Also, are these images GFDL-compatible? -- The Anome 15:40, Feb 7, 2005 (UTC)

Firstly, they are public domain, so are compatable with GFDL. Secondly, I do not believe three is too many, they together demonstrate the concept - otherwise, a fuller gallery could be held at Commons. I do not believe or think any are sensational, and if they were - this would not be the criterion for inclusion in the article. What is important is which is the most descriptive of the idea, of the concept (I would suggest the man hanging). --Oldak Quill 16:34, 7 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Agreed, also, versions without text would be nice. As well as a move to commons. –Ævar Arnfjörð Bjarmason 19:08, 2005 Feb 7 (UTC)

In my opinion, all three "death erection " photos should stay. Here is my reasoning in this matter. The article describes 2 circumstances in which " death erections " occur - Death of a male in the verticle position as in hanging, and death of a male " face down ". The " Nicaragua Hanging Victim " photo demonstrates the fullest extent of the " death erection " after the body has been taken down from a verticle position and laid horizontally. The " Naked Male Hostage " photo demonstrates the " death erection " as it is occuring in the verticle position. The " Naked Male Drowning Victim " photo demonstrates the " death erection " as the result of the drowning victim floating " face down " in the water. However, in my research of the " death erection " topic, the "Nicaragua Hanging Victim " photo and the text below it is the most accurate depiction. The " death erection " article is only partially correct. The erection of the penis and occasional ejaculation in male hanging victims actually occurs AS THE MALE VICTIM IS DYING due to trauma, spinal cord injury, and the physiological effects of asphyxiation on the male body. Strangling, choking, and the struggling for breath can provoke penile erections in males (Ref: " Autoerotic Asphyxiation "). If you have any question, just post them here. infofreak

Hey guys. The pictures look a bit extreme. Somebody's going to stumble across this article and either vomit or have a heart attack. Everyking 05:15, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)

Quite. This makes Mr. Goatse's portrait look like kittens frolicing in a field. -- Cyrius| 05:42, 9 Feb 2005 (UTC)
While my year-long stint at Totse made me immune to almost everything, I greatly question the need for a picture of this. Most people will be able to figure out what it would look like without the aid of a picture of a dead man. --YixilTesiphon 05:46, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)

As a compromise, can't we merely add links to these pictures with a warning message? -- Sundar 05:55, Feb 10, 2005 (UTC)

That's a rather hot topic. See the mess at autofellatio and talk. Since the reason for including a link yet not deleting the pic entirely would be its offensiveness, it's quite POV and will most likely encounter a lot of resistance on principle. Not that I love dead, erect penises. Cheers, TIMBO (T A L K) 07:11, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)
There is no reason why we should allow our culutral POV to affect inclusion. There is no reason why an individual can read, but not see, an image - there is no gore. Simply a cadaver with an erection. --Oldak Quill 15:58, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Oh, I agree 100%. TIMBO (T A L K) 22:40, 10 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Except for the whole "getting Wikipedia blocked at the firewall" bit when some kid loads it up on the school's comptuers. -- Cyrius| 00:02, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC)
Well there's certainly plenty of material on Wikipedia that might make a school block us. I guess it depends on the specific software involved, but I wouldn't be surprised if penis and vulva, clitoris, etc. got Wikipedia blocked. Or even more likely, Abu_Ghraib_torture_and_prisoner_abuse, which contains some pretty graphic pictures. These have all been challenged, with the outcome being to keep the images. It's up to the school whether or not to block us; I don't think we should take that into consideration when making content decisions, though. TIMBO (T A L K) 01:53, 11 Feb 2005 (UTC) Thats going a bit far. No need for a dead erection picture. The article itself explains it well and the picture would add nothing to the quality.--WiseCrow (talk) 03:51, 6 April 2009 (UTC) WiseCrow[reply]
Would it be possible to have a censored photo of a "death erection" and then link it to an uncensored photo along with a warning? If GFDL is an issue I have an extensive personal collection of post mortem photos that I have personally taken; many with "death errections". I would be happy to upload a photo or two and put them in public domain. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 99.232.241.204 (talk) 01:34, 5 December 2009 (UTC)[reply]

Cause[edit]

The article has essentially unreferenced claims that the cause of a postmortem priapism to be blood flowing down under the influence of gravity, but every medical reference I've found indicates it is caused by the spinal cord losing control of the penile engorgement (it seems that the penis is normally prevented or suppressed from erecting, like a closed floodgate). Unless there are sources for the blood/gravity theory, we should remove it. --Dhartung | Talk 08:18, 26 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Currently the reference given do not support the articles content. The first[1] states it is unverified, the second[2] and third[3] discuss priapism and do not reference death. • Er, every message from a person on a website is not a "blog"...the madsci.org one appears to be a moderated mailing list (contributors vetted by site admins as being knowlegeable in their fields), and the message in question is attributed to a person speaking what seems near his area of expertise. That gives is See "Non-scholarly sources" in WP:RS. And to quote the neck-trauma article: "Priapism and loss of the bulbocavernous reflex may occur" is listed under "Signs of spinal cord or brachial plexus injury" (which seems pretty likely to happen during death by hanging). Why only humans?[edit]

Why is this article limited to human death erections when the most famous one, probably even in cyberspace, is the Siberian mammoth death erection? It's also documented and referencable. KP Botany 01:45, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you have the references, there's nothing stopping you from adding them. Not everyone has heard of everything, you know. --Dhartung | Talk 22:04, 28 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]
In this case, thank God. One of the major Siberian Mammoth hunters is often quoted on creationist pages somehow tying this mammoth in the mudslide with an erection to proof that evolution does not exist--it is, in my opinion, one of the sillier claims to proof of God that has come out of creationism, but incredibly amusing, all things considered. I have the original documents, although not handy, but could probably find enough on the Internet. KP Botany 02:51, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Clerks example[edit]

I removed it. The death does not involve neck injury, so doesn't agree with refs for cause of death erection. And according to Toilet-related injury (we have such a page?!) the guy dies while masturbating, so the erection is implied as a left-over from that. DMacks 17:36, 29 January 2007 (UTC)[reply]

The Gibbon quote is not true[edit]

SALAM1428 02:41, 1 May 2007 (UTC)Content that I have read the book of ABULFEDA in ARABIC and the comment of ALI on the death of the PROPHET of ISLAM is: "May my father and my mother died for you, you are pure in your living and death" and the rest of story states: "and he (ALI) did not see from him what usually seen from dead person" So please remove this quote. —The preceding unsigned comment was added by SALAM1428 (talkcontribs).[reply]

The given English translation seems correct ("penis"=="penis" makes sense, "cælum"=="sky" and "erectus est"=="is erect" are correct from my limitted knowledge of Latin) and in keeping with the related commentary in the cited scholarly work. I'd be interested in seeing a scholarly citation for an alternative literal translation of that Latin phrase. DMacks 03:02, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Whether the anecdote is true or not, it is irrefutable that Gibbon passed it on in one of the most important works of Western literature. --Dhartung | Talk 03:44, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

loluretard -- So as long as the source is there it is okay to put it? that's like having the blood libel article without "Alleged" showing up every few lines in it. You remove whats said whenever someone argues the validity of Gibbon's source's quote ,which is to add no where to be found in the original Arabic text, just because there isn't a link for it doesn't exactly mean it isn't true. Having an anti-religion historian forge such quote is hardly surprising(if not by him then by the so-so translation he read from). —Preceding unsigned comment added by 41.206.156.205 (talk) 14:21, 15 December 2010 (UTC)[reply]

This Page is a Disgrace[edit]

This page is pathetic. What kind of pigs believe this is discussion useful. Let me put it in terms I think every contributor to this page will understand:

"You're all a bunch of faggots."

Ironically, an extensive discussion among many contributors resulted in a clear decision that the page was encyclopediac and worthy of inclusion. Admitedly, the discussion did not touch on the contributors' sexual orientation. DMacks 03:33, 1 May 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Well Roman is not nearly related to Islam so its translation is not the justification. Secondly It will raise anger and hatred. Also the given reference is very irrelevant and a result of prejudice. Also consider the person Abulfida was living atleast Five Centuries Later from Prophet Muhammad's ( Peace Be Upon Him ). So Please Quit Hating Our Prophet Because we also Love Jesus. —Preceding unsigned comment added by 116.71.8.86 (talk) 19:57, 29 January 2009 (UTC)[reply]

I have a photo of a death erection from hanging[edit]

It is not any of the ones that have been posted or linked to this article before. It is very good quality B&W. Should I e-mail it to someone so they can submit it or what ??? Would you even want a photo of a death erection for this article ??? 68.211.51.49 05:05, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

If you have a picture, why not submit it yourself? Create a Wikipedia login for yourself, then use have a look at WP:UPIMAGE to learn how to upload your image (after verifying that it's not a copyright violation to do so, obviously). DMacks 05:30, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]
Ok, I created a username and after searching through my collection of forensic photos, I finally found it. I had forgotten that it was a 3 photo series, so I uploaded all 3 photos. I don't know if they could be used on this article without debate, but it does disprove the theory about blood pooling in the lower extremities causing the engorgement of the penis that increases as time passes. This is a brief account as I recollect it : This man was executed early in the morning. His penis became fully erect about 45 seconds after suspension. He ejaculated a large amount of semen while struggling against the rope as he was dying (not after). His body was left on display as a "war trophy" all day. The last photo was taken late that afternoon when they came to cut him down, and the erection had subsided. Here are the photos

thumb thumb thumb I've never submitted anything before. If they can't be used, I understand, but since it was recommended for me to submit them, I did. Thanks OneTimeWiki 23:03, 22 June 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Hi, can someone tell me who this man was and why he was hanged? 138.217.62.32 02:01, 7 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

We need more detailed source information about these images, for example, the specific URL to the website from which they were obtained in order to verify their US Gov copyright status. Otherwise, they will be removed from wikipedia because WP is extremely sensitive to copyright issues. DMacks 23:42, 15 July 2007 (UTC)[reply]

My first impression is that there is no photo needed for this article. We have photos of hangings, we have photos of erections (Actually I just had to replace em... damn censor vandals), so it wouldn't add much. That said, if someone had a a good photo that was both conclusive and useful, I wouldn't opposed to giving it a chance... Epthorn (talk) 13:32, 20 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

In autopsy reports[edit]

How could an autopsist know if a dead man had death erection? When the corpse is laid down should not the blood run down so that the penis becomes flaccid again?
