Content from 1911 Encyclopædia Britannica[edit]

Quite a bit of this information really is out-of-date. Some of the geographical references now pertain to Eritrea. At least one of the terms used is now derogatory. I don't imagine anyone could address all of it in one sitting, but I'll work on it a little bit, for now. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 18:43, 5 Mar 2005 (UTC)

There's quite alot sitting on the plate with this article, Gyrofrog. My intent with my series of edits was to get the material here in some kind of shape before splitting it off into the relevant articles. Oh, I agree, better to have the information here now where people can find it. I wouldn't want anyone to come along and think that someone was still using some of those terms, though hopefully it's clear enough from the "1911" tag. You mention "my background" and make me sound so scholarly! ;-) I wish... Just someone interested enough to contribute some editing. When I finished the lakes anr rivers (for which I hope "Hydrology" was a good label) I then realized that the rest of the article was still 1911-ish. -- Gyrofrog (talk) 23:48, 26 Mar 2005 (UTC)

Climate[edit]

I noticed this sentence in the "Climate" section:

In the more southern districts of Gojam and Wallega heavy rains continue till the middle of September, and occasionally October is a wet month.

Present-day Gojjam and Welega are really more western or central, not southern. Looking at this 1990 map, Gojjam and Welega referred to much bigger areas than they do today. (I'm not sure how the political boundaries on this map would compare to the ones available to the 1911 Encyclopedia Britannica editors.) I wonder if this might be more properly reworded as "In Benishangul-Gumaz and western Oromia . . ." -- Gyrofrog (talk) 15:05, 5 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Sobat River[edit]

The Britannica source mentions that the Sobat River is in the south. Thus far I've been unable to find the Sobat on a map. Perhaps it is known by some other name nowadays. Anyone have more info? -- Gyrofrog (talk) 03:18, 9 Apr 2005 (UTC)

Image:ESA-Lake Tana ASA WSM Orbit 10432 20040227.jpg is being used on this article. I notice the image page specifies that the image is being used under fair use but there is no explanation or rationale as to why its use in this Wikipedia article constitutes fair use. In addition to the boilerplate fair use template, you must also write out on the image description page a specific explanation or rationale for why using this image in each article is consistent with fair use.

An omission needing fixing[edit]

I've been ignoring this oversight for too long. Traditionally, Ethiopians think of their landscape as falling into one of three categories based on elevation: dega, weyna dega, & kolla.
