sculling[edit]

Bob Pearce of Australia was participating in these 1930 British Empire Games. Does anyone know if he won a medal in the singles scull? Reply to rpeirce@cogeco.ca I was born three blocks from Scott Park in August 1930 and he is why my mother gave me the first name of Robert. Thanks

One Robert Pearce did in fact represent Australia at the 1930 British Empire Games and not only that he won one of Australia's first Commonwealth Games gold medals in the single sculls.

He defeated one H. Beresford of England who won the silver and one H. Bradley also of England who the bronze.

irish flag[edit]

why is the flag of Leinster used here rather than the Image:Flag of Ireland.svg? did the irish team at the games represent the whole of ireland, or either north or south? --Astrokey44 11:41, 15 July 2006 (UTC)[reply]

According to the Commonwealth Games Federation it was Northern Ireland. In that case the Leinster flag is wrong. --89.217.170.145 (talk) 11:48, 24 November 2007 (UTC)[reply]

Newfoundland[edit]

Apparently the pic for Newfoundland's Red Ensign has been deleted from Wikipedia. The link to the flag in the medal listings should probably be fixed or removed. I don't know where to get a public domain copy of the flag... Simonus

Handball[edit]

In the Commonwealth Games main article, section 'Approved sports' is something like this: Sport Type Years Handball Recognised 1930 Should this mean that handball was played at these 1930 games? The article indeed has "1930" in the row of handball, suggesting it was played then. However, Commonwealth Games website doesn't have handball in their result archive. 85.76.102.33 (talk) 08:18, 1 September 2016 (UTC)[reply]

Flags[edit]

It's not clear what flags were used by the four home nations in 1930. A bit of Googling yields the following:

This postcard (I think it postdates the games; compare the actual podium) suggests:

England		Union jack
Scotland		Red lion rampant
Ireland		Green harp flag
Wales		Red dragon

But it also suggests South Africa used the red ensign, when the actually used the Oranje-Blanje-Blou (see below).

This report of the opening ceremony mentions (4th paragraph) "the flags and standards of the 11 competing countries" [emphasis added].

The podium photo above is from the Turofsky Gallery in the Canada sport Hall of Fame website. Annoyingly, the photos expected on the pages are missing, but I think they are the same as the listed in the site's Apache directory with 2008.44.99xx in the name. Many are also in Hamilton public library local history (category: IMDB >Collections >British Empire Games Album), which have better captions. Sadly, they're not in colour.

The following Hamilton public library captions have no direct link:

"Parade of the Competing Nations. Eleven Teams in Column before Main Stand" [recordID 11153] the flag for Ireland could well be the green harp.
"Taking the amateur oath. Percy Williams, Of Canada, world's champion sprinter, takes the oath on behalf of the competitors" [recordID 11152] one of the flags visible behind Percy Williams is not a British ensign.
"Parade of the Competing Nations. Springboks of South Africa" [recordID 11136] clearly using the Oranje-Blanje-Blou , not the red ensign .

The Welsh flag is just about visible behind New Zealand in this photo; it could well be the red dragon. According to this preview article, the order was to be "Newfoundland, Bermuda, British Guiana, Australia, New Zealand, South Africa, Wales, Ireland, Scotland, England and Canada"; dunno whether Wales skipped ahead of South Africa or New Zealand fell behind them. jnestorius^(talk) 18:59, 8 April 2013 (UTC)[reply]

In fact, the "Flags of competing nations ready for presentation to team managers" clearly shows the Irish harp and Scottish lion (clearer on the larger Hamilton Public Library jpeg). When the host country is Canada. Show the province, not the country, in the intro[edit]

Though I disagree with showing the "province", in the intro. To avoid inconsistency (at least) among the Games (1954, 1978 & 1994) that had Canada as host? I've replaced the "country", with the "province". GoodDay (talk) 05:01, 17 August 2022 (UTC)[reply]
